Yesterday Maureen O'Donnell, ILFA CEO and Gemma O'Dowd, ILFA Stakeholder Engagement Lead met the Respiratory team at St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, to present an update on the work of our organisation, information regarding recently expanded activities, new programmes, and the extensive support that ILFA provides to our members and healthcare professionals. Huge thanks to Darren Kenny for organising the meeting, for creating this opportunity for ILFA to meet and engage with this amazing group. Míle buiochas

Diet and Nutrition with Lung Fibrosis 🥗

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of managing lung fibrosis. Good nutrition helps to maintain muscle strength and support lung function—both essential for overall wellbeing.

A balanced diet can also help manage symptoms such as nausea, breathlessness, and acid reflux. Maintaining a healthy weight is another key factor in improving quality of life, making diet a vital part of care.

At ILFA, we provide a range of practical guides and resources to support your dietary needs when living with lung fibrosis.

LungFibrosis Awareness Socks 🧦
The Irish Lung Fibrosis Association@ilfa_ireland is delighted to partner with Thomp2 Socks to raise valuable funds and awareness of lung fibrosis.
This special fundraiser is in memory of Finbar, a co-founder of Thomp2socks, who passed away last year with lung fibrosis.
Thomp2socks says "These socks are about more than style - they’re about awareness, hope, and making a real impact. Inspired by the message “Every Breath Counts”, this special edition pair is designed to shine a light on pulmonary fibrosis and support those living with lung disease across Ireland. Featuring a bold red and blue design and a unique lung-inspired tree graphic, they’re a symbol of strength, resilience, and the power of community. We’re proud to be working alongside the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association, with 100% of proceeds from every pair going directly to support their vital work in research, education, and patient support.
Instead of a fixed price, we’re asking you to be part of the movement. While our usual socks are €10, for these we invite you to donate whatever you can, with a minimum of €10. By wearing these socks, you’re helping spark conversations, raise awareness, and support a cause that truly matters.

Places are still available for the ILFA Psychological Counselling Grant Scheme.

The scheme provides financial support for up to six counselling sessions with an ILFA-vetted and suitably qualified psychologist. The scheme is available to individuals diagnosed with lung fibrosis and one family member or carer.

This is a pilot programme and funding is limited, however if demand is strong it could also support future funding requests for mental health supports.

Limited places are still available on a first come, first served basis. To register your interest or if you would like more information, please contact Kelly by email at [email protected]

We are still accepting referrals to the Virtual Pulmonary Fibrosis Rehabilitation (VPR) Project.

Led by the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association (ILFA) and funded by the HSE, this 9-month study will provide a structured virtual programme to patients with lung fibrosis and other progressive fibrotic interstitial lung diseases.

Healthcare professionals can refer suitable patients via the referral form on the ILFA website under “Our Work” or via https://ilfa.ie/virtual-pulmonary-rehab-referral/

As part of ILFA's Virtual Pulmonary Rehab, every member plays an important role - not just for themselves, but for the entire lung fibrosis community.

Here's how you can help make a difference:
- Attend your scheduled sessions
- Complete pre and post assessments
- Give notice if you need to cancel
- Keep ILFA informed of any changes

This is a funded 9-month pilot study - your engagement helps us demonstrate real impact and secure the future of this service for all ILFA members. Your privacy always comes first. All information is strictly confidential, and survey data is fully anonymised. "We're in this together!"
