🎤 Giving Voice to the Voiceless: Tim Dalton on Advocacy, Rights & Aging

In this episode of the Sage Advocacy Podcast, we’re joined by Tim Dalton, board member of Sage Advocacy and former Secretary General of Ireland’s Department of Justice and Equality.

Tim reflects on a lifetime spent working in justice, human rights and humanitarian causes, and explains why independent advocacy is vital for older people and vulnerable adults.

From financial abuse and lost decision‑making power to the impact of Ireland’s Assisted Decision‑Making Capacity legislation, this conversation highlights the importance of listening, dignity, and ensuring every person’s voice is heard.

New Podcast Episode: Respecting Choice – Rethinking Capacity, Care, and Human Rights.

How do we balance keeping people safe with respecting their right to make decisions?
In the latest Sage Advocast, host Angie Mezzetti speaks with solicitor Martina Larkin, Legal Support Unit Lead at Sage Advocacy, about Ireland’s Assisted Decision‑Making (Capacity) Act. They explore:
✔ Why capacity is always presumed
✔ The duty to provide communication supports (extra time, visual aids, yes/no boards)
✔ How Enduring Powers of Attorney and Advance Healthcare Directives give you a voice in future care
✔ Why “protecting” someone can never mean taking away their rights

This is essential listening for anyone supporting older people, working in care, or planning their own healthcare and financial wishes.

The UK’s agreement to disregard payments under Ireland’s Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme for means-tested benefits is a major victory for Irish survivors living in Britain.

After years of advocacy by survivors and campaigners, the promised introduction of Philomena’s Law will ensure that survivors living in the UK can receive redress without being financially penalised.

Thank you to the strength and resolve of Philomena Lee and all persons and groups who persevered in their two year campaign on behalf of survivors.

📣Our campaign for Philomena's Law has achieved a major victory today
At a summit in Cork, the British government announced it would introduce a new law ensuring applicants to Ireland's Mother & Baby Institutions Payment Scheme living in Britain won't lose their means-tested benefits.

This comes two years into our campaign to secure Philomena's Law and is a landmark achievement.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved in the campaign, especially those groups providing support to survivors: London Irish Centre, Fréa, Coventry Irish Society, icap, Luton Irish Forum

Thank you also to Liam Conlon for Beckenham & Penge for engaging with and listening to survivors and driving the campaign in Parliament.

Survivors will no longer find themselves financially penalised for accepting the redress they are due in recognition of the abuse and trauma they experienced.
