The Grand Send Off Party - 7pm Friday 22nd June 2018

Just in case you haven't heard the news yet, we are transferring to Maynooth University this summer after 44 years at Kimmage Manor.

On behalf of all the staff at Kimmage DSC, we invite you to The Grand Send Off Party at 7pm on Friday 22nd June 2018 here in Kimmage Manor.

We are inviting all graduates, former colleagues and those who, in so many ways, have generously supported us over the years.
We realise that not all of you will be able to join the party, however we trust that you will be with us in spirit and hope that you might send us a short greeting/message or short memory of your time at Kimmage DSC - please send these to Paddy: [email protected]

The evening will be informal - its going to be a party - with a few words from staff and (we hope) from some of the alumni present. We really hope that you can make, perhaps it's a great reason to gather your class year and have a reunion with us.

As two organisations with a long history of collaboration and common ground on development and development education, Kimmage DSC and Comhlámh are delighted to invite you to their forthcoming event, ‘How Critical is our Development Education in Ireland?’

The interactive event will be an opportunity for development education practitioners to engage with findings from Eilish Dillon’s Doctoral research ‘How Critical is Talk? Discourses of Development Education among Facilitators in Ireland’ (2018), which focuses on how development education is understood by those who support and promote it, and the implications of these understandings for how development education is organised and practiced in Ireland.

Join us to explore and reflect on the findings. In light of them, what can we say of our own dev ed practice? How relevant or critical is it? How easy or difficult is it to develop and sustain critical approaches? How can the findings and our reflection inform the policy (and political) environment in which we practice?

We warmly welcome development educators of all hues (adult and community educators, youth workers, teachers, lecturers, NDGO workers, activists….). The event will take place in Kimmage Manor, May 2nd, from 10.30am – 3.30pm and will combine plenary sessions with paired sharing and interactive group work. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch to the venue, but tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day.

Fair Trade Fortnight

It’s that time of year again – Fairtrade Fortnight 26th Feb to 11th March 2018. And this year we are asking Irish people to Check Out Fairtrade and help change the world!
Over the past 12 months, we have done some amazing things, and we are getting ready to do even more.

New Fairtrade sourcing programmes for cocoa are ensuring that significant extra volumes of cocoa are being sold in Ireland especially through the discounters Lidl and ALDI. We are seeing significant growth in Fairtrade coffee sales especially through Bewleys, Insomnia and Starbucks.

Bewley’s, Ireland’s oldest coffee company, re-opened their iconic, and perhaps the best-known Café, in Dublin. They are serving a very fine blend from Costa Rica as part of their commitment to sustainably source 100% of their Bewley’s branded coffee from small farms on Fairtrade terms.

As Juliet Arku-Mensah, from the VREL banana co-op in Ghana says; “Here, Fairtrade is about empowering workers and empowering women too. They are able to come to me and tell me the difficulties they face at work. Through this, the company is able to get information about what might need changing and then problems become easier to solve”
