Usually full of mischief and kitten energy, little Biscuit's family knew something wasn't right when he suddenly became quiet and very down in himself.
Biscuit had only been found as a stray kitten a couple of months earlier and was settling into his new life when he became unwell. Trusting their instincts, his owners brought him to our veterinary team for help.
After blood tests, imaging and further investigations, we suspected something was blocking his intestines and surgery confirmed this. Our team discovered the blockage was made up of dead worms and corn.
After carefully removing the blockage, Biscuit's digestive system thankfully started working properly again. The best part of the story is when he returned for his follow-up appointment, he was bright, alert, eating well and back to his cheeky self. In other words, exactly how a young kitten should be!
Biscuit's story is a reminder of two very important things:
If your pet isn't acting like themselves, trust your instincts and seek veterinary advice. Small changes in behaviour can sometimes be the first sign that something is seriously wrong.
Regular worming is essential for both cats and dogs, even pets who spend most of their time indoors. Intestinal worms can affect their health and wellbeing, and puppies and kittens are particularly vulnerable. Following your vet's advice on parasite prevention can help keep pets healthy and avoid problems before they start.
We're delighted to see this little stray-turned-family-pet back to enjoying life and causing the kind of mischief kittens are famous for.

Yesterday, representatives from The Irish Blue Cross were in Leinster House to discuss the proposed Dog Breeding Establishments (Amendment) Bill 2026 with the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee.

We welcomed the opportunity to share our frontline experience and set out recommendations aimed at strengthening welfare standards, traceability, socialisation, breeding controls and enforcement.

You can read The Irish Blue Cross submission here: https://bluecross.ie/submission-on-the-general-scheme-of-the-dog-breeding-establishments-amendment-bill-2026/

You can also hear Dr Claire Corridan, Director of The Irish Blue Cross, discussing the proposed legislation and sharing her thoughts on KFM in this reel

We believe that strong legislation, clear standards and effective enforcement are essential to improving the welfare of breeding dogs and puppies in Ireland.

See the difference your support made in 2025
Behind every figure in our Annual Report is a pet, a family and a real need for veterinary care.
Our work is only possible because people choose to support The Irish Blue Cross.
Thank you for being part of it.

If you care about the future of dogs in Ireland, please have your say!
The Oireachtas is currently inviting the public to make submissions on proposed changes to dog breeding legislation: https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/committees/making-a-submission/public-consultations/20260731-public-consultation-on-the-pre-legislative-scrutiny-process-of-the-general-scheme-of-the-dog-breeding-establishments-amendment-bill-2026/
The Dog Breeding Establishments (Amendment) Bill 2026 could bring important changes to how dog breeding establishments are regulated, including proposals around breeding limits, breeding ages, inbreeding, socialisation, staffing, puppy sales and enforcement.
But before these proposals progress, the Oireachtas wants to hear what you think.
You don't need to be a breeder or an expert to take part. If you own a dog, work with animals, or simply care about dog welfare, your experience and views are valuable.
Please take a few minutes to have your say.
Your voice can help shape the future of dog welfare in Ireland.

Your dog is giving you 'the' look. But when temperatures climb, the kindest thing you can do is to leave the lead hanging by the door.
Dogs can struggle to cool themselves down, and hot paths can burn their paws.
☀️ Walk early in the morning – if it’s cool enough
🌡️ Check the ground before you head out
🧠 Try a scent game or food puzzle at home instead
💧 Keep fresh water available throughout the day
Remember: your dog doesn’t need to miss out on fun just because their walk is cancelled.
A frozen dog-safe treat, a gentle training game or some time relaxing somewhere cool can make a pretty good summer day too.

There is a lot of well-meaning but incorrect advice circulating online about keeping dogs cool in hot weather, so here are some myth busters to help. Advice changes as veterinary science progresses. For instance, it was thought in the past that the quickest way to cool dogs was to wet the parts of them with the least amount of fur, but studies have found that thorougly soaking dogs with cold tap water, all over their body is the quickest way to cool them.
If you suspect your dog has heatstroke, do this as quickly as you can and call your vet. Get them wet & call your vet!
