Animal Rights Action Network, or better known as ARAN, was formed in 1995 in order to expose and campaign peacefully against all forms of cruelty to animals. For twenty-one years, the highly respected and effective grassroots group led by its founder John Carmody - campaigned on countless issues affecting animals here in Ireland and around the world - issues such as animals in circuses, blood spor
ts, fur farms, greyhound racing, promoting spaying and neutering, encouraging people to adopt and never buy animals, running the only national animal rights educational program 'Kindness to Animals' in community groups, schools, colleges and universities, supporting international campaigns and legislation efforts, plus much more. Up until 2012, Ireland had the 'Protection of Animals Act 1911' - Our lobbying helped to bring in the new 'Animal Health and Welfare Act' 2013. Our campaigning also helped to bring in Dog Breeding Establishments Act, banning wild animals in circuses, signing up stores and Ireland's leading department store Brown Thomas to go fur-free, pressuring Ireland to sign up to the EU seal product trade ban, enlisting the support of Irish and international celebrities to the animal rights efforts in Ireland, encouraging huge numbers of people to adopt compassionate diets, engaging thousands of people to take meaningful action to speak out for animals, banning the ward union stag hunt, encouraged Dublin Zoo to upgrade its outdated gorilla enclosures (although animals free in the wild has always been our aim) - and much, much more! ARAN worked with a nationwide team of dedicated, hard-working volunteers who helped with research, campaigns, education, administration, general activism and other areas. Our work provided humane solutions to the problem of cruelty so that people and animals can live in harmony. What is the situation today for animals in Ireland? As a result of ARAN's campaigning there's now huge awareness, more people taking action, more animals free of abusive situations, more animals alive, increased political awareness and legislation, huge numbers of people taking action to help animals and national media exposure of almost every single issue facing Irish animals today. The group began a natural wind down on June 30, 2016
