Biodegradable, compostable, biobased... what's the difference? 🌱

🤔 Environmental labels can be confusing, and sometimes they can make a product sound as though it will simply disappear if it ends up in nature.

However, "biodegradable" doesn't mean an item will break down quickly in every environment. Meanwhile, many compostable products need particular conditions to decompose as intended. And "biobased" describes where a material comes from, not necessarily how it should be disposed of.

This year’s National Heritage Week theme, “Heritage at Risk”, asks us to consider the places and practices that are endangered and how we can respond with care and collective responsibility.

Litter is one of many pressures facing the natural environment. It can harm wildlife, pollute habitats and gradually fragment into smaller pieces that become increasingly difficult to remove.

Heritage is not only found in museums and monuments. It is under our feet, above our heads and all around us.

🐦‍⬛🦔🪼 Does litter truly harm wildlife? Have you ever wondered it, or is this the first time you've thought about it?

Either way, the answer is YES. Litter absolutely harms wildlife & causes injury & death to animals across land, air & aquatic ecosystems. Animals do not possess the ability to distinguish human trash from natural objects & this can lead to devastating physical consequences.

When we think about plastic pollution, we often picture litter on our streets or washed up on our beaches. That isn't the whole story.

Most plastic is made from fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas. From extraction and manufacturing to disposal, plastic has a carbon footprint and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

How can we help? Well, to protect our local environs and the climate by reducing unnecessary single-use plastics, choosing reusable alternatives and recycling properly are great starts! 💪

Nature conservation is about what we PREVENT 🚫 as much as what we PLANT 🌱

Let's prevent litter, pollution and wildlife habitats from being damaged.

Each day, our actions help or hinder the places wildlife thrive and call home 🏡
