Are you looking for a flexible way to give back, meet likeminded people and learn new skills? The DLR Community Volunteers might be for you!

DLR Community Volunteers is a group of over 200 volunteers supporting local charities and organisations to bring events to our community. You can sign up for the events that interest and suit you, giving you the choice of a variety of volunteer roles that fit into your schedule.

So far this year, this amazing group of dedicated volunteers has helped to deliver DLR Age Friendly magazines, welcomed visitors to the first music performance at Dún Laoghaire Baths and supported Mental Health Ireland's "Hello, How Are You?" campaign.

Volunteers supporting the arts in Dún Laoghaire 🎭

Eleven DLR Community Volunteers stepped up to support two wonderful live arts performances at Dún Laoghaire Baths this week! They provided invaluable practical support throughout the evening—welcoming guests, answering attendees' questions, and helping to create a warm, inclusive, and inviting atmosphere for everyone.

The performances were part of The Story We Tell Tomorrow, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council's current Public Arts Programme. The performances, "Rainbow Rapids & The 100,000 BOLTS" by Cian Murphy and Jenny O'Malley, and "LUNA" by Sal Stapleton were exceptional. Congratulations to all involved.

A big shout out to the DLR Arts Office for such a well organised event series. Volunteers felt really supported, and would be delighted to be involved again at future events.

A special thank you to the volunteers, for giving your time and energy to your local community.

The DLR Community Volunteers had a wonderful time supporting the Recovery Fest this weekend. A big thank you to the DLR Drug and Alcohol Taskforce for organising such a fun and meaningful event.

We helped with welcoming attendees and directing them to activities, and we had lovely chats with local people! Our team thoroughly enjoyed seeing everyone dancing and singing together, sharing an afternoon of joy.

We were delighted to organise the Hope Tree, collecting messages of hope from attendees.

Some of our favourites were:

"Remember where you came from"
"When there is strength in people, there is strength in me"
"Life is worth living in the good times and the hard"
"Keep it simple and in the moment"

To anyone out there who is in recovery, keep going and know that your community is in the background cheering you on! On Tuesday 14th July, DLR Volunteer Centre hosted a community clean-up at Killiney Hill 🌳

A huge thank you to the 13 volunteers who joined us to help care for this beautiful local space. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, enjoy the outdoors, and make a positive difference for local wildlife.

Your time, enthusiasm and kindness made the morning so enjoyable, and your efforts have helped keep Killiney Hill a cleaner, safer place for people and nature alike. Thank you for making a real difference!

We were delighted to find much less litter than we expected—a great sign that more people are helping to keep Killiney Hill clean for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who is playing their part. Even still, together we collected 4 large bags of rubbish, helping to make the hill safer for the wildlife that calls it home.

Volunteers supporting sustainability in Dún Laoghaire 💚

DLR Community Volunteers had a wonderful time at Restyle Dublin in Dún Laoghaire last week, an event organised by The Environmental Forum. We are delighted to see strong momentum building in Dún Laoghaire in the sustainable fashion space and to join in with this movement for change!

At ReStyle Dublin, a space was created where people could learn how to repair and upcycle their clothes, swap their pre-loved for new ones and find out more about how we can prevent our wardrobe from ending up in landfill.

A massive thank you to our team of volunteers who shared their sewing knowledge, organised clothes ready to go to their new homes and made sure that attendees felt welcome and got to where they needed to go. Thank you for giving your time, and skills!

ReStyle Dublin was funded by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the Irish Environmental Network, MyWaste and delivered with support from the Rediscovery Centre.

Volunteers from Dún Laoghaire Rathdown provided excellent support at the Women's Mini Marathon this month.

This group of amazing volunteers powered through the fast-paced action at the water stations — filling tens of thousands of cups and keeping runners going strong. Their energy and dedication truly shone, with runners stopping to say "thank you" and even shouting "we love you!"

Cheers echoed both ways, as volunteers encouraged runners and runners cheered back; there were some beautiful moments of connection and community.

We were delighted to partner with Cuala GAA for this event, and we thank Damien and his team for the ongoing support and encouragement to facilitate this involvement.

A big thank you to Sefiu Adewale Esan, our volunteer photographer on the day.

This was a great experience for the volunteers, and we thank them hugely for giving their time and energy on the day. It's an iconic event in the calendar, so we were delighted to be there!

Knitting the Community Together 💙

We are so proud to share the story of our Knitting the Community Together project with you!

Over a period of eight weeks, volunteers from all backgrounds came together for knitting sessions, some learning to knit for the first time. More than 50 volunteers joined us, representing 18 different nationalities.

Together they made hundreds of knitted squares, which were then sewn together to make cosy cot blankets for premature babies.

Our colleague Anna Rooney, together with 2 of the volunteers that joined the project, were delighted to present 18 blankets to the staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the National Maternity Hospital. We are so grateful to the staff there for this wonderful opportunity and partnership and we hope that the families will be happy to receive their blankets.

We are sharing this video, which has brought back so many good memories, to give you a sense of these creative connections sessions. We want to say a huge thank you to the volunteers that joined in. We enjoyed the chats and getting to know you, and your kindness and support for each other warmed our hearts.

It's Refugee Week in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown, and we were delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the Courage exhibition in the DLR Lexicon library. Our display in the exhibition, which was launched on Saturday 13th June, features a Collage of Courage created by volunteers, and other works handmade by volunteers as part of our Creative Connections project series.

We were really happy that some of the volunteers joined us at the launch event, and we thank all of the volunteers who participated along the way.

A special thank you to the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Local Authority Integration Team for the invitation and support to take part, and to Creative Ireland for funding support. DLR Lexicon staff were really helpful when we were setting up.

We really appreciated the space and support provided by Sarah McDonagh, Community Engagement Officer, IADT, to host the collage workshops, and to artist Misha Abbas who facilitated these sessions.

The exhibition is still available for viewing until Sunday 28th June, so hope that you can pop in to check it out.

It was our pleasure to attend the launch of IADT’s Community Engagement Charter on Wednesday. It’s clear that IADT are placing a high value on community building and partnership in the local area.

What stood out most to us was the Charter’s commitment to empowering volunteering, active citizenship, climate action and inclusive engagement – aims that are so closely aligned with the work we do every day at Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Volunteer Centre.

Strong communities are built through connection, collaboration and shared purpose, and it was encouraging to see these values reflected throughout the Charter and the conversations on the day.

Congratulations to everyone involved in its development, and thank you to the IADT team for hosting such a welcoming event and creating space for community partners to connect and network. And a special mention to Leah O Donoghue for the fantastic visual note-taking, capturing the spirit and key themes of the event so beautifully (pictured).

Volunteers encouraging conversations 😊

Hello, how are you? A question that we ask so often, but rarely wait to genuinely listen to the answer.

The DLR Community Volunteers were honoured to join Mental Health Ireland for this year's "Hello, how are you?" campaign at Connolly and Heuston Stations.

We chatted to people on their journeys and shared information about how we can all connect with those around us by engaging in open conversations about mental health. These small actions can have a big impact, and we are so grateful to the volunteers who got involved.
