Have a listen to Charleston's Irish history from our good friend & ex-CofC Professor David Gleeson. Read his book "The Green and the Gray: The Irish in the Confederate States of America (Civil War America)" for more.

The new episode of Transatlantic is live! Professor David Gleeson returnes to discuss the long and varied history of the Irish in Charleston & Savannah, from the 17th century to the present day. We hear about the surprising extent of that emigration, as well as some very specific regional links:

Listen to 42. The Lowcountry Irish: The Story of Savannah & Charleston from Transatlantic: An Irish American History Podcast. The coastal area of South Carolina and Georgia, known as the "Lowcountry", may not be the first place that springs to mind when it comes to Irish America. But the historic ci...

🇮🇪 A taste of Ireland in the Lowcountry 🇮🇪
With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, it’s nice to see a bit of traditional Irish baking here locally.

Shauna, originally from Ireland and now living in Summerville, recently started a small home baking page called Grá Baking, where she makes traditional Irish baked goods in small batches.

Things like Irish soda bread, brown bread, fresh scones, and other classic bakes — all available locally for pickup in Summerville.

If you’d like to follow along or place an order, you can find her page here:

Want to be the Carolina Rose at this year’s Rose of Tralee?

I just received this email with more information.

On March 8th, we will be hosting our flagship event at The Daily in Uptown Charlotte as part of the global Rose of Tralee International Festival. This year is especially meaningful, as it marks the first time the North and South Carolina centers are coming together to present one unified Carolina Rose. The selected Rose will go on to represent the Carolinas this August at the Rose of Tralee International Festival in Ireland.

We would love to connect with the Charleston Irish community and surrounding areas to help spread the word about this opportunity. If you know of any young women who may be interested in applying to become the Carolina Rose, we would greatly appreciate your support in sharing this with your network.

In addition, we are currently seeking raffle donations and local sponsorships to help send our 2026 Carolina Rose to Ireland. Proceeds will also support the continued growth of the Carolina Rose Center within our community. Sponsors and donors will be recognized at the event and featured across our social media platforms.

If you have connections to local Irish shops, bars, restaurants, or businesses that may be interested in donating or partnering with us, we would be grateful for an introduction.

We truly value the strength of our Irish community and would love to collaborate.

Warm regards,
Chantel Cassidy
President, Carolina Rose of Tralee
