Did you spot the Aer Lingus plane at CHS over the weekend? Their flight from Dublin to Orlando was diverted to CHS due to weather and the passengers spent the night in Charleston.

Reminder of David Gleeson’s talk this Wednesday

14/06/2026

There’s a change of location for Prof David Gleeson’s talk.

A message from Joe Kelly:
Please note the change in venue for Dr. Gleeson's talk on July 1. Because of a problem with HVAC we have moved next door to the Beatty Center.

Many of you will remember Dr. Gleeson, the world’s foremost expert on the Irish in the American South, from his years teaching history here at the College of Charleston. With the help of the Consulate General of Ireland, Atlanta, CofC’s Irish and Irish American Studies has lured him back—at least for one night. Dr. Gleeson will give an informal talk on the oft-neglected Scotch Irish contribution to early American history.

A w**e & b**r & softdrink reception will precede Dr. Gleeson's talk in the atrium outside the Wells Fargo Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

July 1, 6pm
Wells Fargo Auditorium, 5 Liberty Street (there’s a public parking garage around the corner on St. Philip St.)

Have a listen to Charleston's Irish history from our good friend & ex-CofC Professor David Gleeson. Read his book "The Green and the Gray: The Irish in the Confederate States of America (Civil War America)" for more.

The new episode of Transatlantic is live! Professor David Gleeson returnes to discuss the long and varied history of the Irish in Charleston & Savannah, from the 17th century to the present day. We hear about the surprising extent of that emigration, as well as some very specific regional links:

Listen to 42. The Lowcountry Irish: The Story of Savannah & Charleston from Transatlantic: An Irish American History Podcast. 🇮🇪 A taste of Ireland in the Lowcountry 🇮🇪
With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, it’s nice to see a bit of traditional Irish baking here locally.

Shauna, originally from Ireland and now living in Summerville, recently started a small home baking page called Grá Baking, where she makes traditional Irish baked goods in small batches.

Things like Irish soda bread, brown bread, fresh scones, and other classic bakes — all available locally for pickup in Summerville.

If you’d like to follow along or place an order, you can find her page here:
