Thank you to Newstalk for hosting our CEO, Fiona O'Malley to discuss how Sonas is calling on the Government to change the laws to explicitly state that pet abuse is a distinct form of coercive control in abusive relationships. Last year, Sonas worked with the NSPCA to arrange temporary accommodation for pets while women and children access refuge or safe-home support.

Sonas is calling for legislative reform similar to the UK’s “Ruby’s Law” campaign, which has progressed to bill stage in the UK Parliament. Irish legislation does acknowledge animal cruelty as a relevant factor in domestic violence cases under section 5(g) of the Domestic Violence Act 2018, but it does not go far enough in explicitly protecting pets or recognising pet abuse as a form of coercive control. Sonas is calling for courts to be allowed to include pets within safety/barring/ protection orders and sentencing to be strengthened where pets are used as a form of domestic abuse or coercive control
