Emily Williams, ICCL’s Policing & Justice Policy Officer, spoke to RTÉ yesterday about the death of Mr Yves Sakila on Henry Street last week.

We are very concerned about the disproportionate and excessive use of force against Mr Sakila and are calling for the investigations by An Garda Síochána and Fiosrú to be carried out swiftly, thoroughly and transparently.

The Garda Powers Bill is a wide-ranging piece of legislation which would put all the powers that gardaí have in one place. This was a recommendation of the Commission on the Future of Policing.

While ICCL broadly welcomes this Bill we are concerned that there are no definitions of specific types of searches (e.g., frisk, search, intimate) or information on what rank of gardaí is required to authorise each type; not enough information will be collected in the record of a stop and search; and there is insufficient protection of journalistic privilege.

Join us tomorrow to discuss what a genuinely health-centred approach to drug policy would look like, and what this requires in law, policy and practice.
Ireland is at an important moment in the development of our drug policy.

The Citizens’ Assembly on Drugs Use recommended a move towards a health-centred approach to drug policy. This event will bring together people from across different communities, sectors and areas of expertise to support informed discussion on what a genuinely health-centred approach to drug use could look like and what this requires in law, policy and practice.

A new Bill was published last week which would allow gardaí to access any CCTV operated by a public body (live access or recorded footage) without any authorisation process.

It would also allow the Garda Commissioner to designate public areas with "a pattern of criminal activity" as Crime Prevention Zones (for up to two years). Gardaí would be able to put up cameras in those zones without having to go through an authorisation process.

(The Bill doesn't define "a pattern of criminal activity".)
This is a deeply concerning attempt to remove the current safeguards which prevent inappropriate use of CCTV by Gardaí in public places.
