Our Words, Your Language | Day Three

The last day of Our Words, Your Language began with pitches for their recent and forthcoming titles by writers Sheila Armstrong, Niamh Campbell, Naoise Dolan, Roisin Kiberd, and Ferdia Lennon.

Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin sat down with his two translators from Irish, Elvira Veselinovic and Indrek Ois, then Micheál Ó Conghaile and Naoise Dolan discussed why they write in Irish.

Writers Niamh Campbell, Wendy Erskine and Mark O’Connell discussed the role of place in their work with moderator Roisin Kiberd. The day concluded with a talk by Dr Christophe Fricker on the future of literary translation.

With heartfelt thanks to all the translators and publishers who attended Our Words, Your Language, as well to our funders Culture Ireland and the Arts Council for the support.

We are proud to celebrate Irish writing and its translation across Europe.

Our Words, Your Language | Day Two

Claire Power, Director of Poetry Ireland and the team at Poetry Ireland / Éigse Éireann welcomed the translators and publishers to their magnificent home for poetry at no. 11 Parnell Square. Highlights included readings from poets Vona Groarke, Professor of Poetry 2025-2028, Seán Hewitt & Mary O’Malley. Translator Clare Azzopardi read some of Vona’s poems in a newly-commissioned Maltese translation.

At Books Upstairs the visiting translators and publishers had the opportunity to pick up some Irish books and meet with some independent Irish publishers, The Lilliput Press, Cló Iar-Chonnacht, and New Island Books.

Dr Lucy Collins launched ‘Looking-Glass Pages: Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin in Translation’ edited by Virginie Trachsler and published by Literature Ireland. This publication celebrates Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin’s work translated into various languages, ranging from French to Ukrainian.

Our Words, Your Language | Day One

Last week Literature Ireland hosted Our Words, Your Language | Ár bhFocal, Bhur dTeanga, a three day conference celebrating literary translators and publishers from the languages of the European Union together with their Irish writers.

In the beautiful setting of the Dún Laoghaire LexIcon studio, we enjoyed the words and wit of Anne Enright, John Banville and Kevin Barry, as well as lively discussions and panels about different kinds of literature from across the island of Ireland, how to translate Hiberno English, the origin of words and phrases, and Ireland’s specific sense of humour.

As part of Cultúr 26, the official cultural programme of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Our Words, Your Language brought together over 60 translators and publishers from across the European Union to celebrate Europe’s long-running track record of engaging with the very best of contemporary Irish literature. We are grateful to Culture Ireland Ireland for their ongoing support and endorsement of our work, and to the The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, for their strategic funding of Literature Ireland and its programmes.

A month in books: August 2026 📚

Literature Ireland's Translation Grant programme invites international publishers to apply for a contribution towards the translation of Irish literature from English or Irish into another language. For 30 years now, Literature Ireland's archive has housed copies of these awarded books!
