Heritage Trail 🪧

Fancy learning about the history and heritage of Killester from everything such as the Killester Garden Village which is a WW1 ex-servicemens estate to transport history, family history, local history, military history, built heritage, football history, gardening and horticulture and much more well how about take a walk around the veterans estate and visit the various heritage signs and history boards 📌🏡🎖

Today the Killester Garden Village Committee in association with the Killester Donnycarney Football Club and Hadden Family unveiled a new history board about Staff Sergeant Bill Hadden M.M. formerly of 77 Abbeyfield who Hadden Park is named after at the Killester Sports and Social Club.

Staff Sergeant Bill Hadden M.M. was a Dubliner who served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during WW1 and served mainly in France. He was awarded the Military Medal as he tended to injured soldiers under enemy fire during the war. Bill married Mary Hadden who was a Nurse and they settled in Abbeyfield in the 1920s with their children. Bill worked as a Civil Servant in the Department of Agriculture for the rest of his working life. Bill was a prominent WW1 ex-servicemen in the Killester Garden Village from the 1920s up to the 1950s, he was instrumental in getting permission from the Irish Sailors and Soldiers Land Trust to use the land at where Hadden Park is now to use for football. Bill and other veterans cleared the land in 1928 which then led to the start of football in Killester. Football was popular with the veterans as this is what they played while serving in the military. During WW2 or the Emergency Bill was again a leader in the community and established the Killester Air Raid Precaution Unit (ARP) and became its Chief Warden and Instructor. Bill was also involved in a Civilian Anti-Gas School and Fire Extinguishing Unit.

As you can see Bill was a leader in the community of the Killester Garden Village and was a pioneer in establishing football in Killester with the creation of Hadden Park so it was an honour to erect this history board into the Killester Sports and Social Club for all to learn about the story behind Hadden Park in the Killester Garden Village.

The Great Northern 150
Sunday 4th October 2026

To celebrate 150 years since the founding of the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) we are running two special trains along its premier route the Dublin to Belfast mainline with the 1913 built former GNR(I) locomotive No. 171 Slieve Gullion.

Our special trains will run from Dublin Connolly to Dundalk and return, with a break in Dundalk. And we are offering a local trip from Dundalk to Drogheda and return.

Who remembers the 72nd Killester Scout Group? 👇

Scouts marching down the Howth Road circa 1940s, St Brigids Church in the background.

Most likely they are 72nd Killester Scout Troop which had a den in a wooden hut near Haddon Park. The unit or hall no longer exists.
