“A few years ago, I was feeling overwhelmed by the climate crisis. I was deeply worried. Worried, not just about the future of our planet and the incredible animals we share it with. But also about the people already suffering from floods, droughts and displacement.

I needed to connect with others who felt the same urgency. I needed hope and I needed action.

That’s when I found the Friends of the Earth community. Joining this community gave me a space to talk, to learn, and most importantly, to act. I met people who reminded me that change doesn’t come from despair, it comes from solidarity, persistence, and grassroots power.

Eventually, I became a staff member at Friends of the Earth, and it has been life-changing. Every day, I get to work alongside amazing people, supporters and volunteers to protect nature, push for justice, and fight for a fairer, safer future.

These new t-shirt designs remind me of why I joined the climate movement. The “Save What We Love” design is a tribute to the wildlife and natural places that make this island so special and the importance of saving our nature. The “Climate Justice Now” design celebrates the power of community and collective action.

Climate justice means understanding that the climate crisis is also a justice crisis. While big polluters and rich countries have caused the most harm, it’s the most marginalised, especially in the Global South, who are facing the worst impacts.

These designs are reminders of why we fight. To save our planet. To protect the people and places we love. And to build a future where we are all safer, together.”

"I used to find climate change quite overwhelming. I knew that playing my part was important. But where to even begin I wondered? It was hard to see what I could do as an individual - this problem is far too big for any one person to solve!

Then I went to a Friends of the Earth Cuppa for Climate event. That led me to connect with people who care about climate in my local community. Soon we were having exciting conversations about what we could do together, to really make a difference.

Before long, I had joined my local environmental group, Sustainable Skerries. We hosted another coffee morning to talk about climate change in a local café, the Rock Bakery. Over hot drinks and lovely cake, we had some great discussions about the power of individual and collective actions that we can take.

Talking about climate action with friends, neighbours, and coworkers is a great way to spread awareness of climate solutions and find common ground. Now I’m involved with a community of passionate and hardworking people. Together, we’re working on a wide array of projects to help make our area more sustainable.

It’s through this community action that we can play a real part in tackling the climate crisis. "

Climate change is causing the world’s glaciers to collapse at an alarming rate. Last month the Swiss village of Blatten was destroyed after the collapse of a glacier buried it in mud.
If we don’t act now, sea levels will rise to frightening levels - endangering millions of people🌊⚠️
But there is hope. We could still save half of the world’s glacier ice if we slash our polluting emissions now. At Friends of the Earth we’re campaigning hard to do just that - pushing for climate action that is fast and fair all over Ireland🌎

“Recently, I was really saddened to hear about Venezuela losing the last remaining glacier, the Humboldt Glacier, from their Andean region.

My grandfather was born in that region. As a Venezuelan, it is heartbreaking to see natural icons melt away into history as climate breakdown accelerates.

To see beautiful features that once defined very special landscapes, gone, possibly forever. It’s not easy to accept. In fact, it’s truly devastating.

We need a space to talk about these things. So I was delighted when I saw that Friends of the Earth was hosting a Cuppa for Climate event in Cork, where I live. During this event we had some lovely hot drinks, sweet treats and a chance to talk about climate change with other like minded people. It was a very enriching experience to spend time talking about our concerns. We also talked about what we can do to help nature - and to help each other!

As the saying goes, 'there's strength in numbers'. The event definitely allowed me to understand that even if we have different backgrounds, we can all come together and work towards a better future. I left feeling quite hopeful for what's to come - with some extra contacts too!”

“I'm Collette, and this is my good friend Catherine. We both live in Inchicore in Dublin 8. We love the area and wanted to get involved in taking action on climate change. We were frustrated about the issue and really wanted to make a positive contribution. So we signed up to do a Friends of the Earth 'Cuppa for Climate' event and invited people from the neighbourhood to come along.

We held it on a beautiful summer evening, we made lemon drizzle cake, and people of all ages and genders came along, which was so lovely to see. There were really nice, open conversations about our experience of nature and biodiversity. We learned about the work local people had already done for the environment, and talked about all kinds of ideas like community gardens, pocket forests, and more.

Really important connections were made - it was so inspiring to see people come together on this issue. I'm so inspired - in fact I plan to host another one soon!”

"The price of electricity is doing my head in. News this week revealed that over 300,000 families and employers were behind with their electricity bills at Christmas. It’s a shocking figure but I’m not surprised. Energy bills in Ireland are just so expensive - among the highest in Europe.

What really gets me is the unfairness of it all. The Government is letting energy-guzzling data centres use way more than their fair share of energy. Around half of the electricity produced in the Dublin/Meath region is used up by data centres!

Not only are data centres increasing energy bills for householders but they’re also fuelling climate change. They burn through fossil fuels at a rate of knots. And that’s not all. Data storage space in Ireland is exported to countries involved in serious human rights abuses, like Israel.

Thinking about it makes my blood boil. But it also motivates me to campaign for change!

Data centres are doing as they please in Ireland but it doesn’t have to be this way. They can be stopped. More and more people are waking up to the harm they’re causing. Community groups are getting together to stop new data centres in their areas. People from all walks of life are starting to speak out about the threats they pose.

It gives me a lot of hope to see this movement against data centres grow. Together, we’re putting more and more pressure on the Government to stop data centres running riot in our country. And that feels good. As an individual you can feel powerless in the face of big corporations. But when hundreds of us join together we can make real change happen. That excites me."

“I first became concerned with the climate crisis about 10-15 years ago. I remember reading some articles about it on the Friends of the Earth website and being surprised by it. As the months and years went on, I noticed how the seasons were changing and becoming more unstable. How the Spring would begin very early or late and reading how this affects farming and nature.

For example, our garden birds like the Blue T**s time their nesting period to coincide with the emergence of caterpillars that feed on fresh Oak leaves. If these don’t coincide you are affecting the feeding of young birds. This made me feel very worried and sad that we humans are causing so much damage to the natural world. A world we depend on for our lives too. It also made me feel angry and frustrated.

I decided to join Friends of the Earth because of the great work it was doing to highlight the climate crisis. I have great respect and admiration for the work it has done in this area for so many years. Joining a group like Friends of the Earth gave me hope.

It was great to know that other people were as worried about these crises as me and wanted to take action to do things to improve the situation. It has improved my mental health as now I am actively involved with trying to make things better.

I have also met some great people as a result of my involvement with environmental groups like Friends of the Earth. Some of them are now my friends. I have learned a lot of new skills. It has enabled me to be a better communicator and organiser”.

“Caring deeply about the environment and human rights has always been a part of who I am. But in 2020, during the pandemic, I felt isolated and disconnected, unable to take meaningful action. Coming from a part of the world less directly impacted by climate change, it’s easy to overlook its urgency.

But witnessing the activists from small island nations on the forefront of this challenge, like Brianna Fruean, showed me the stark reality of climate change’s day-to-day consequences, which made me even more sure that I needed to get involved. Yet I still felt isolated, as many of my peers didn’t share the same sense of urgency or concern about the crisis.

That’s when I came across Friends of the Earth (FoE) and their local volunteer arm, Dublin Friends of the Earth. Joining them was a turning point for me. Through monthly meetings, events, and eventual hands-on activities, I found a community of people who shared my drive for change.

I no longer felt alone. I felt hopeful and energised. Being surrounded by people who understood the gravity of the crisis and were also taking action gave me a sense of connection and purpose that I was missing.

Getting involved with FoE not only gave me a way to contribute meaningfully, but also inspired a career change so I could dedicate myself fully to addressing the climate crisis. I know this is not an opportunity everyone has, but just simply being part of FoE has shown me the power of collective action and that community is important to stay inspired to keep on fighting the good fight.

It’s a way to turn isolation into collaboration and despair into active hope.
We need this more especially as we begin to notice the growing impacts closer to home such as extreme weather events that are affecting us all in more tangible ways. Together, we can work towards a fairer, safer future for our families, friends, and communities.”
