June 15th is World Elder Abuse Day. It is an official United Nations International Day acknowledging the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. The message is that every older person has a right to live a life free of any form of abuse.

Everyone has the right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect.

Our Greater Dublin Regional Manager Suzy Byrne today attended the first national meeting of local Disabled Peoples Organisations (DPOs) supported by the Independent Living Movement Ireland. Suzy made a presentation to representatives about the work of NAS Advocates in supporting disabled people in decision-making and particularly with having their will and preference understood with regards to arrangements under the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act. The attendees made recommendations for the inclusion of DPOs in the forthcoming review of the act and the need to ensure that disabled people were aware of their rights to be presumed as decision-makers and receive supports in decision-making in line with their will and preference. DPOs also received information on how to support disabled people in contacting NAS Advocates should anyone they know of require more information on advocacy services.

This morning The University of Galway School of Law launched the LIFT Research Project report 'Living Independently & Free from Targeted Abuse (LIFT): Understanding the Experiences of Disabled People'.

NAS was part of the advisory board, which oversaw the research focusing on experiences of mate crime and targeted abuse against disabled people in Ireland. Mate crime occurs when disabled people, particularly those with intellectual disabilities, are manipulated, exploited or abused by people who are friends or trusted persons in their lives. Mate crime can take the form of financial abuse, physical assault, sexual violence, or emotional manipulation. NAS welcomes the findings, which includes evidence-based recommendations to inform legislative and policy reform.

Make Way Day is tomorrow Friday 29th May. It is a nationwide campaign highlighting the everyday obstacles that people with disabilities face in public spaces — from cars parked on footpaths to bins and bikes blocking the way.

It’s a simple but powerful message: small actions can have a big impact.

These everyday obstacles can force people onto busy roads or stop them from getting where they need to go safely.

Let’s all play our part in creating safer, more inclusive communities. Read more about it by clicking on the link below!

A compliment received by a NAS Advocate from a person they supported. Our role is to work with those who may be isolated from their community of choice or mainstream society, may communicate differently and who may have limited informal or natural supports. NAS Advocates act as a catalyst for change through collaboration, capacity building and representation to make the rights of people with disabilities a reality.
