Earlier this year, VSI joined a network headed by called ‘Preventing Gender Violence’ (PGV). PGV Network includes 16 organisations from 15 different European countries all working to prevent gender-based violence in youth work and youth projects. This campaign is part of it and we will be sharing one post every Wednesday till the end of November for it.

"Tick tick… 1 month before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Where are we now? Still 1 in 3 women in the EU have experienced violence. Behind every figure is a real voice. Swipe to learn more about it and start the conversation with women and girls around you."

A huge thank you, good luck and wishing the best of everything to our former ESC volunteer, Sharmistha, as she wraps up her six-month volunteering with VSI!

Reflecting on her time with us, Sharmistha shared: “My 6 month ESC project with VSI has been a transformative experience. I was able to meet so many people across the NGO sector and meet many people on my international exchanges that I can now call my close friends. I learned a lot about working in an NGO and its inner mechanisms and attended many inspiring talks and workshops, it was an incredible experience!"

Our Programmes Coordinator, Eiméar, attended the SCI Exchange Platform Meeting this week in Prague. This annual meeting brings together SCI organisations to exchange best practices and share what we learned throughout the year. We are grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with our international partners and take inspiration for the year ahead!

VSI volunteer Tom Higgins is on an SCI project ‘Supporting the Citadel of Peace' in Italy: “Enjoying helping in the food store, vegetable garden and second hand clothes shop. Visited the beach and the ancient burial site: 500 BC necropolis”.

Dylan volunteered with VSI on an ESC Team project in Asturias, Spain, learning sustainability through action, culture and rural life. The volunteers did maintenance and gardening work: “I had lots of fun on my volunteering trip to Spain, I learnt so much about different cultures and made so many new friends!”

Our volunteer Sharmistha recently took part in the Shooting Stars project hosted by SCI Catalunya: "I had a wonderful time in Can Xammara, a social and educational project, where myself and 5 other volunteers built a structure to support a telescope for star gazing. We learned about the constellations and saw Saturn through the telescope!"

We held our AGM last Saturday in the Carmichael centre. Thanks to everyone who attended, both in person and online. A warm welcome to our new board members Shauna Hogan and Daithí O'Manachain, we’re looking forward to working with you.

Our second group of international volunteers finished their project in Killarney National Park last week. Together with the first group we hosted in July, they made a significant contribution to protecting the native woodland there and combatting the spread of invasive species like the Rhododendron, with both groups planting over 300 native Irish trees in total throughout the park.

Thank you to all our volunteers for your time and effort, and to our coordinators for your enthusiasm and passion, not to mention all the staff and park rangers in the National park who guided our volunteers throughout. We can't wait to do it all again next year!

Our second volunteer group has been making the most of their free time in Killarney National Park — including getting out on the water with a kayaking trip at Ross Castle. A big shout out to Hester and William from Killarney Kayaking for taking them out!

Reflecting on their experience, Kate, one of the coordinator's shared:

“We’re having a brilliant time planting native trees here in Killarney National Park. We’ve planted hundreds of oak, birch, alder and willow trees so far. A huge thanks to the fantastic Park Rangers, Muckross House staff, kayaking team at Ross Castle, and to VSI for making this project so memorable”.

Our second international volunteer project is well underway at Killarney National Park! 🌿

From conservation work to learning about the local environment and connecting with fellow volunteers, it’s a unique opportunity to experience the beautiful landscape of Killarney. The volunteers have already planted over 70 native Irish trees around the park!
