OACS Ireland has now lost a grandparent who brought their child to neurology for help in relation to her childs epilepsy. That child was subsequently put on Sodium . The child grew up and had two beautiful children who have been exposed to sodium valproate and have a diagnosis of .

This grandparent will never be able to go before the Chair of the Sodium Valproate Inquiry to give her testimony. We are losing grandparents of children with FVSD. Unfortunately, time is running out for them.

We urge all grandparents to write down their experiences of bringing their child to , who now have grandchildren with a diagnosis of FVSD. Our sincere condolences to the family in question.

EMA Holds Precautions Despite Mixed Evidence.

Unresolved Evidence Drives Continued Caution:

The most recent review was triggered in July 2025 after publication of a Danish nationwide registry-based study that found no increased NDD risk in children born to men treated with valproate. In reassessing the full evidence base, PRAC concluded that differences in study design — including patient selection criteria and approaches to controlling for underlying health conditions — probably account for much of the variation in findings.

PRAC could not determine whether a potential risk for NDDs in children of fathers treated with valproate before conception results from valproate or other factors, such as the fathers’ underlying medical condition. In light of remaining uncertainties and pending results of an ongoing study expected in 2028, PRAC agreed that precautionary measures introduced in 2024 should remain in place.

EMA has found inconsistent data on developmental disorders in children of fathers using valproate before conception and retains existing precautions.

A significant chapter in Irish public health began today as the long-awaited Sodium Inquiry officially commenced for Stakeholders. OACS Ireland attended the first session accompanied by Boylan’s litigation law firm. OACS will be represented every day of the hearings. Theresa Byrne and Karen Keely outstide the hearings today.

Due to the ongoing road blockages throughout Ireland, Children’s Health Ireland is asking those involved to make sure that all approaches to medical facilities are always kept clear.

This is essential for emergency services, patients and families attending appointments and healthcare staff working in our hospital sites.

The protests have had an impact on services in CHI at Crumlin, Connolly, Tallaght and Temple Street as they have delayed patients and families attending hospital appointments and have delayed healthcare staff getting to and from work which impacts operational activity.

CHI is asking patients and families who have upcoming hospital appointments to:

- Allow extra time due to significant travel delays
- Plan an alternative route to avoid the affected areas of the city

If you believe that you won’t be able to make the appointment due to the protests, please contact your relevant department to reschedule your appointment to a future date.
