The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Four hundred times more radioactive material was released during this disaster than had been by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. It is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history and is the only level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale. It
’s a voluntary registered charity (Chy12648) with the head office in Waterford but with the members span the whole of Ireland. Our main aim is to provide comfortable living conditions, good food and holidays for the children in various orphanages and other children who badly need it. All our members are voluntary, ordinary working people who give up their time freely to make a better life for children in Belarus. There are many members of the charity who have never been to Belarus but who work tirelessly all year round fundraising the money to bring the children to Ireland and pay for supplies to take out to the orphanage. As Chernobyl Aid Ireland is totally voluntary organization, we fully rely on the donations and fundraisings. Within the years Irish people have been very generous in donating building materials, clothes, footwear, toys, hygiene products and also coming to orphanages in May and September to carry out building and maintenance work. Builders, carpenters, plasterers, plumbers, electricians, farmers, doctors, nurses and dentists from all over Ireland were doing their part in order to improve the life of these children. Progress to date has been fantastic. We made up our mind not to give up on these people and support them as long as we can. Volunteers are the heart and soul of our charity. Without their commitment and support during all these years we wouldn’t be able to achieve so much. Thanks to their involvement, their energy and their passion we can make better life for children and adults and give them something they’ve never had before – our love and hope for a great future!
