Dublin Food Co-op, Kilmainham

Dublin Food Co-op, Kilmainham Organic, vegetarian, whole foods co-operative. Member discounts 5% - 25%. Everyone welcome to become a member! A true food democracy in Dublin since 1983. Wexford.

What is Dublin Food Co-op? We are Ireland's leading location to buy organic, local, Fairtrade and sustainable products. But that's not all! Our co-operative principles and member ownership mean that we're much more than a farmers market – we're a true food democracy in the heart of the city. Our Roots & Evolution

The Co-op's roots lie with a group of friends involved in a campaign to stop the Gov

ernment building a Nuclear Power Station at Carnsore Point, Co. Together, in 1983, they formed a buying group to save money by bulk purchasing vegetarian wholefoods and other sustainable living products. Within a short time, this embryonic co-operative had moved toward trading weekly from a hired hall at St. Andrew's Resource Centre on Pearse Street, which became our home for more than two decades. Dublin Food Co-operative Society was formally registered in 1991 and was a pioneer of organic and local food long before the rise of farmers markets in Ireland. As the Pearse Street venue did not allow for either expansion or permanence, in later years the Co-op began what became a long search for a new home. We finally moved in July 2007 and a new chapter began. The Co-op today

Since establishing our own premises, we now open seven days a week and organise or host a growing number of events. In short, Dublin Food Co-op is a vibrant community that goes far beyond food. True to the co-operative tradition, we offer an alternative to the profit-oriented business model - surplus funds are used wholly to benefit members by reducing prices and improving services and facilities. Anyone is welcome to visit and shop with us, member or not. The Co-op is 100% owned and controlled by its consumer members. JOIN US!

Another quote from one of our lovely members on why being a member of the Co-op was important to them and their community.

"We need to address climate change and biodiversity loss by living an environmentally-friendly lifestyle, and that includes our everyday shopping. We need to move to a more plant-based organically-produced diet and the Coop encourages that with a great range of fruit and vegetables.

It minimises packaging use and especially plastic which is so destructive of the environment. Recycled products are sold as much as possible and re-using bottles for re-filling is facilitated.

All in all, you feel you are doing your bit when you leave after shopping in the Co-op!"

“There’s a nut butter for every occasion, whether it be breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a simple snack!”

For our latest supplier profile, we met with the charismatic & inspiring Harry from one of our favourite Dublin 8 neighbours, Harry's Nut Butter !

We've been massive supporters of Harry & Co since they first launched at the the Fumbally Christmas Market of 2019, so we're extremely excited to share their inspirational story with you. They have truly created a nut butter revolution as well as opening the minds to many on the endless possibilities of peanut butter.

🌱Vegan Dinner Idea🌱

This vegan bean paella is a delicious meal that's full of protein and fibre, perfect for serving up to family and friends.

Ingredients:
• 1.4 litres vegetable stock, plus extra if needed
• 750ml dry white wine (optional – use additional stock if not using)
• pinch saffron
• 500g risotto rice
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 2 onions, finely chopped
• 3 peppers (any colour), roughly chopped
• 4 garlic cloves, crushed
• 1 tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste
• 1 tbsp paprika
• 8 small tomatoes, halved
• 100g green beans, roughly chopped
• 400g cooked beans
• 150g tofu, cut into small cubes or crumbled
• salt and freshly ground black pepper

To Serve
• 2 limes, sliced
• pinch nutritional yeast (optional)
• Fresh parsley

Method:
• Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Pour the stock and wine into a large saucepan and stir in the saffron. Bring to a slow boil. Add the rice, reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Keep an eye on the rice and don’t stir it too much. If it starts to boil dry, add more stock.

• Meanwhile, heat a little oil in a large paella pan. Add the onion and peppers with a sprinkling of salt and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes, until beginning to soften. Add the garlic and spices and cook for another 10 minutes. Once the rice has absorbed most – but not all – of the liquid in the saucepan, transfer it to the paella pan. Stir to combine all of the ingredients, then mix in the tomatoes, green beans, tofu, butter beans. If the mixture seems too dry, add some more stock at this stage. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes.

• Serve immediately in the paella pan, garnished with slices of lime, nutritional yeast and a parsley.

We have received a lovely review from a customer:

"Super spot for good products - you can't get better tasting fruit and veg unless you are growing them yourself. When I pop in I always stock up on some of the delicious fairly traded chocolate. The co-op also has innovative eco-friendly cleaning products as well as offering refills".
