This online study day aims to explore the intersection of
Reception and Revival: the reception of ancient Egypt and Religion. The day will begin with introductory presentation from ISSE Co-Chair “Global Histories of ‘Egyptomania’”
Michelle Keeley-Adamson, followed by a keynote talk
from Dr Judit Blair. Attendees will then hear from a
number of scholars researching this topic, who will share
15-20 minute presentations that provide an overview of an
area of their ongoing research relating to religious practice
and theory, from early Christianity to modern day
witchcraft and magical practices.
Discussing the intersection between the reception of
ancient Egypt and religion signals an interdisciplinary
approach to research. Participants will benefit from
learning about postsecular research during this event.
After the Q&A, this event will conclude with a workshop
style discussion where speakers and guests can share
thoughts on the importance of this area of reception
studies, along with the opportunity to share best practice
and research tips.

CALL FOR PAPERS
ISSE Annual Online Conference, 2026: Classic Conventions, Contemporary Conversations: The Reception of Egypt
8 August 2026: ONLINE
🪲🪲🪲
We are thrilled to announce the Call for Papers for our annual online conference!
🪲🪲🪲
The annual ISSE conference aims to draw together international scholars and interdisciplinary studies connected to the study/theme of Egyptomania, providing a space for this research to be shared.
🪲
Coined in the early nineteenth century, the term ‘Egyptomania’ has seen many interpretations especially in recent years with scholarship broadly discussing its use and its place in Reception studies. This conference offers a chance to further develop our understanding of the importance of Egyptomania studies, focusing on interdisciplinary, inclusivity, and innovative scholarship.
We encourage abstracts from everyone with an academic/scientific interest in ‘Egyptomania’, including students, independent scholars, professional academics, and early career researchers. As the conference aims to provide a global perspective on the topic/add to the global narrative, we are particularly keen to receive abstracts from researchers based in countries that have been traditionally overlooked in this context. We want all voices to be
heard. Paper topics and subjects we would like to see include, but are not limited to:
Architecture
Art History
Decolonisation
Development of Egyptology as a discipline
Ethics (e.g. treatment/display of mummified remains)
Fashion & jewellery Historiography Literature – both ancient and modern
Material Culture
Media Studies (Music, cinema, television etc.)
Museum & Heritage Studies
Photography
Reception Studies Reception of ancient Egypt within Egypt (past and modern)/
Egyptian Egyptomania
Travel Studies
Visual Culture

ISSE TALK! 3rd May 4pm BST online!
Reception History of Ancient Egypt and Judeo-Christian Gnosticism in Modern Japan: From Seitarō Okajima (1895–1948) to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Neon Genesis Evangelion by So Miyagawa
🪲🪲🪲
This talk explores the multifaceted reception history of Ancient Egypt and Judeo-Christian Gnosticism in modern Japan, tracing a trajectory from early scholarly encounters to contemporary pop culture phenomena. The presentation begins with Seitarō Okajima (1895–1948), one of the pioneering figures who introduced Egyptological knowledge to a Japanese audience in the early twentieth century, and examines how his work laid the groundwork for Japan’s enduring fascination with pharaonic civilization. Building on this historical foundation, the talk then turns to two globally influential works of Japanese popular culture: Hirohiko Araki’s manga series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (1987–), whose third arc Stardust Crusaders prominently features Ancient Egyptian motifs such as the Egyptian god-inspired Stands and a climactic battle set in Cairo, and Hideaki Anno’s anime Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995–), which draws extensively on Judeo-Christian and Gnostic symbolism, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, and figures such as Adam and Lilith. By juxtaposing the academic reception of the early twentieth century with the creative reinterpretations found in late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century anime and manga, this talk illuminates how Ancient Egyptian and Gnostic imagery has been selectively appropriated, transformed, and recontextualized within Japan’s unique cultural landscape, offering a distinctive case study in global Egyptomania.
