An Asian hornet - a non-native species that poses a serious threat to honeybees - was confirmed in Cork this week after being spotted by a vigilant member of the public.

This discovery has triggered an emergency response, with efforts now underway to locate and eliminate any further presence of this invasive insect across the island.

The public is being urged to stay alert and report any suspected sightings via the National Biodiversity Data Centre’s Alien Watch portal.
