What is the difference between a residual haunting and an intelligent haunting?
A residual haunting is like a recording or replay of past events: it does not involve a conscious spirit at all. Scenes, sounds or movements—such as footsteps, voices, or figures walking the same path—repeat in loops, triggered by time, weather or built‑up energy in the location. These events have no awareness of the living, cannot respond to questions or actions, and never deviate from their established pattern.
An intelligent haunting, by contrast, involves a conscious, self‑aware spirit that retains its personality, memories and free will. These spirits are capable of interacting with the living: they may respond to questions, react to your presence, move objects on purpose, or communicate directly through sounds or signs. Their behaviour can change based on what you do or say, and they often seem to have a reason for making contact—whether to share a message, ask for help, or simply revisit a place they knew.
