What is Beaver Survivor?
The Survivor series of events represents some of the most challenging activities in each scouting section. They are designed to develop your backwoods and camping skills, your appreciation for surviving in the outdoors and improve your abilities across the ONE programme. For Beavers, this is a fun opportunity to think about the outdoors, explore local nature sites and get an introduction into some of the cool scouting things they may hear about or see from older sections. The activities undertaken are scaled up at the National Survivor events for older sections, so a Beaver in your colony trying these activities now may go on to earn the Survivor badge in every section!
The rationale for any national activity, particularly one organised locally, is to show participants (and organisers) the full extent of what's possible in that section's programme. Its aims are
To inspire you to try new things in your section,
To see what other sections do around the country,
To showcase the gold standard for programme delivery and how to achieve it.
Everything you do in a national activity is planned with these aims in mind.
By making connections between different parts of our programme, it will become clear what an engaging and enjoyable activity looks like and will (hopefully) make it easier to plan your own activities. You don't have to start with ten separate challenges straight away, but see if you can develop an activity in your weekly section meeting to cover more than one adventure skill or more than one special interest badge. A really great activity will include elements from all the SPICES, so start small and work your way up.
Contained in this pack is all the information and know-how to run Beaver Survivor Challenge.
The Challenge Cards.
There are 10 Challenge Cards, you only need to do 6 of the first 9 challenges. You can decide which 6 best suit your skill set and activity location. If you need to modify any of the challenges due to location constraints, please feel free to, but remember these are meant to be a challenge for the Beaver Scouts.
Everyone should complete the final challenge; this challenge is designed as a fun way to cement teamwork after a long day of activities.
If you are printing these cards to use on the event, please consider printing multiple pages per sheet to reduce cost and environmental impact. You could also laminate the cards so they can be reused on future meetings or activities.
The Scouters Handbook.
The Scouters Handbook contains detailed information on how to run each challenge. With equipment lists, estimated run time and suggestions on how to run the challenge to ensure Youth engagement. On each page there's also a link to a video explaining the skills behind each challenge.
The Beaver Survivor Challenge Badge
Each Beaver Scout who completes the required challenges to an acceptable standard can be awarded the Beaver Scout Survivor Challenge badge. These can be worn on the Beaver jumper, above the Scouting Ireland badge (Activity Awards).
The cost for this event is €2 per person (minimum of 8 Beavers)
