Ireland generates approximately 170,000 tonnes of used textile waste per year, which has increased steadily with the rise of fast-disposable fashion consumption. Reusable cups and bottles are everywhere.

You could be forgiven for thinking that’s an entirely good thing.

But you know the scene: you bring one to an event, everyone else brings one too, and yet three different stalls still try to send everyone home with another incongruously branded cup.

Nobody plans to collect reusable cups and bottles. They just multiply in cupboards until you accidentally own enough to hydrate a small expedition.

That’s the problem. A reusable container is only better if it is actually reused – properly, repeatedly, and for years.

One bottle used every day is brilliant. A collection of thirteen bottles sulking at the back of a cupboard isn’t an environmental triumph. It’s a personal warehouse.

And no, when they finally reach the end of their life, they cannot be recycled from home with the rest of your green bin recycling.

They are often made from thicker metals, rigid plastics or mixed materials, which makes them completely different from cans, bottles, tubs and trays.

The only thing to do is to use the one you already have until it looks like it’s been put through every picnic, commute and school run in Britain.

If you forget it and buy a drink in a single-use cup, that’s not ideal – but then again, buying another reusable cup because you forgot yours is like buying a second car because you left your keys at home. Technically possible; obviously ridiculous.

Reusable cups and bottles are tools, not trophies. If they’re being acquired faster than they’re being used, the maths has gone off a cliff.

So, if your cupboard is now a nesting site for unwanted bottles, stop adding to it.

Use one. Give genuinely spare ones away, if someone actually wants them. But don’t keep accepting more just because they’re free.

Because a reusable bottle sitting unused in a cupboard of shame isn’t saving the planet. It’s just taking up space next to the ice cream maker that you thought would change your life.

And when they’re finished, remember: they don’t belong in your home green bin with the rest of your recycling.
