The NRH Foundation is delighted to be the funding partner of the innovative NRH Research Project – Learning Health System (LHS) Integration for Next-Level Knowledge at NRH (LINK-NRH).

LINK-NRH, led by Professor Áine Carroll, Professor of Integrated Care and Improvement Science/Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine in UCD/NRH, aims to embed a LHS within the NRH, enabling continuous, real-time improvement grounded in the lived experiences of patients, staff, and volunteers. The project will deliver measurable benefits for patients, staff, and volunteers through strengthened co-design, enhanced use of patient outcome data, and real-time feedback for continuous improvement.

It is hoped that LINK-NRH will position the NRH as a national leader in rehabilitation innovation, and as a model site for embedding learning systems into care. The NRH Foundation is very excited to be a funding partner in this exciting project, and we are looking forward to its development over the next 2 years.

Celebrating World Photo Day 📸💚
A photograph can capture a moment, but it can also preserve a memory, a milestone or a special connection. Today, we’re looking back through the NRH archives at some of the wonderful moments captured by past patients and staff over the years.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the NRH story and helped create these memories. 💚

A Miracle on Djouce
Marking the 80th anniversary of this spectacular event, one of the NRH long-standing volunteers, Bill Nelson, has composed a commemoration booklet to remember and retell this remarkable Wicklow-Paris Story. In conjunction with Wicklow County Council, this booklet, ‘A Miracle on Djouce’, will be launched on Tuesday 18 th August in Wicklow Town Library. 📚

Following the launch event, a limited number of copies will be available to purchase through the NRH Foundation, with the proceeds of sale raising funds to support the Hospital. The booklet tells the very unique story of the historical events that took place on 12 th August 1946 when a Junkers 52 aircraft took off from Paris with a group of French Girl Guides, bound for Dublin on the invitation of the Irish Girl Guides. The aircraft had twenty-six people on board, including the crew.

En route, the aircraft became lost while flying above the Dublin and Wicklow mountains and crash-landed on Djouce Mountain. An epic rescue operation followed, involving Gardaí, mountain rescue and many local volunteers. Miraculously, all on board survived. Congratulations to Bill on this fantastic production, and we wanted to wish him the very best of luck at the launch event.

In our ‘Throwback Thursday’ post this month, we wanted to highlight the amazing funds raised by the 1st Dublin Fairview Scout Group. This wonderful group raised funds for the NRH Foundation in both 2016 and 2017 through the organising of bag packing activities in their local community.
The money raised was restricted to the Rehabilitation Training Unit (RTU) in the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH). If your community group would like to support the patients of the NRH through a fundraising initiative, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We would love to hear from you! ✨

New Golf Equipment making an impact

The new specialised equipment purchased for the NRH Sports Physiotherapy Department has already significantly elevated the golf programme as part of the rehabilitation journey for some patients in the NRH. Very positive feedback on both the optics and the quality of the equipment has been received from both the NRH golf coach and all the patients who have utilised this new equipment. Some of these items include:

🟢Driving net - patients really enjoy the chance to practice driving. The NRH didn’t have the right equipment to facilitate this activity before.

🟢 2 self-return putting mats. These have enabled more efficient and more independent play without a staff member needing to return the ball after each shot.

🟢Supportive grip equipment. These tools for modified grip have enabled players with upper limb impairments, such as weak grip after a stroke, to play golf using both arms.

On behalf of the staff of the Sports Physiotherapy Department and the NRH Patients, we wanted to sincerely thank Dun Laoghaire Golf Club for enabling all this fantastic equipment to be purchased to support patients on their unique rehabilitation journey.
