CHEEERS was established in 2015 by a group of Irish healthcare professionals who have volunteered at Kisiizi Hospital Uganda and within the local community since 2005.

CHEEERS works alongside Kisiizi Hospital staff and the local community to develop a number of healthcare projects and provide further education and training. In April 2015, CHEEERS sent the first multidisciplinary team of eight medical and allied health professionals to Kisiizi Hospital. The multidisciplinary team included a Psychiatric Registrar, three Physiotherapists, one Occupational Therapist and three Dietitians. In 2016, CHEEERS sent a larger multidisciplinary team of thirteen allied health professionals including five Physiotherapists, two Occupational Therapists, four Dietitians and two Speech and Language Therapists. A huge thank you to Lynskey Engineering for taking on an incredible 200+ kilometre sponsored cycle from Dublin to Leitrim in support of CHEEER:DHT! They raised a fantastic €1,875 🚴‍♀️👏

As a completely voluntary organisation, fundraising is essential to our work. All donations go directly towards healthcare projects, essential equipment and educational prpgrammes at Kisiizi Hospital.

As anyone who’s travelled to Kisiizi knows, a 4x4 to travel in is a must to reach some of the most rural surrounding areas. Every year we work with the Kisiizi hospital board on what they would like support to develop, over the years this has included broncoscopes, echocardiogram and an xray machine. This year the hospital have proposed a new ambulance, fully kitted out with life saving equipment so patients can be treated whilst in transit, not just transported to the hospital as is happening now. This is a long term funding commitment and the hospital have estimated this to cost £70,00. Our team have had a great success in running the 2026 CHEEERS Conference in collaboration with our partners from Kisiizi and further afield. This year we worked with the hospital board on choosing the conference theme “the role of the MDT in preventing adverse events” and we have welcomed speakers Amon and Night from Entebbe hospital as well as Kisiizi staff. Your fundraising supports this conference to take place and enables healthcare workers from Kisiizi and across Uganda to attend 🇺🇬

Our team have hit the ground running since their arrival at Kisiizi 🇺🇬 some volunteers have already started delivering training to nursing students and all have started meeting their local contacts from Kisiizi and working alongside them on the wards. They have completed their training days, finalised their project goals and are almost ready to go!
