Up for Sale

The recent edition of El Correo Gallego reports that the Irish College in Santiago is for sale for €3.5m.

The College is in the old part of Santiago. It was established in 1605 to train priests for the “mission” to Ireland and shortly thereafter moved to its present location at Rua Nova. In its early years Dónal Cam O’Sullivan Bere was closely associated with it.

The College was one of a series of colleges set up in Europe after the defeat at Kinsale. Paris and Leuven/ Louvain , now both in the ownership of the State, and a pride and joy, were others and of course we lost Salamanca.

It was at Leuven/Louvain that the “Grand Project” was developed to: make St Patrick a patron of the Universal Catholic Church so that his day was celebrated throughout the Catholic world and the idea of Ireland not forgotten; to organize the collection and writing up of the old manuscripts so that our history would not be lost (work subsequently accomplished by the Four Masters) ; and to convince Spain to accept the Irish Chieftains into the Spanish Aristocracy so that some temporal power would remain in Gaelic hands.

The Colleges would then supply priests to be smuggled back to Ireland as part of the underground or in the case of Spain at least to elect to serve in the Spanish armed forces.

Two things are immediately obvious form this: first, that the defeated Gaelic Order now feared complete obliteration and secondly that Gaelic Ireland’s best chance of survival was to be from Europe with European help.
