OCL is delighted to be one of only 10 charities awarded a £5000 grant from the Benefact Group under Movement for Good. Many thanks to all who nominated us. As a small charity run on voluntary donations and the invaluable time and expertise given pro bono by our healthcare professionals, every support is hugely valued.

When our volunteers first met baby Naswirinia in 2024, (pic one) she was severely malnourished, having been born with a very narrowed lower oesophagus. Led by Prof martin corbally, the OCL team in advised Naswirinia's doctors at Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar es Salaam, on feeding her directly into her stomach (gastronomy). A year later and Prof Corbally returned to see how much stronger she was and the team was able to perform a successful oesophageal dilation. Naswirinia (pic 2) is now able to swallow food normally and we are hopeful that after a few more dilations she will not require any more dilations.

Operation Childlife Transforming Lives – Keegan’s story

Keegan is an eight-year-old boy who waited a whole year for his final hypospadias surgery, a procedure that would normally be completed during infancy in Ireland. Keegan faced a long and difficult path, undergoing nine previous unsuccessful surgeries before finally receiving definitive treatment. Without treatment, severe hypospadias can lead to problems with urination, and by adulthood, difficulties with sexual function and fertility.

Keegan’s successful surgery was performed by Operation Childlife volunteer Dr Alshafie, Consultant Paediatric surgeon and Urologist, on an Operation Childlife Clinical mission to Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar Es Salaam in March 2025.

Keegan is pictured here with his father and Dr Alshafei.
