Understanding Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)
An Occupational Therapy Workshop for Parents and Caregivers
Does your child become highly anxious when faced with everyday demands or expectations?
Do they seem to avoid tasks, routines, or requests in ways that are difficult to understand?
Join us for an informative and supportive workshop exploring Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), a profile often associated with autism that is characterised by an extreme avoidance of everyday demands and expectations due to high levels of anxiety.
During this workshop, we will explore:
• What PDA is and what it can look like in children and young people
• How anxiety can influence behaviour and demand avoidance
• Common challenges experienced at home, school, and in the community
• Practical strategies to reduce stress and support positive engagement
• Ways to build trust, connection, and cooperation
• How to adapt communication and expectations to meet your child's needs
This workshop aims to help parents and caregivers develop a deeper understanding of PDA and leave with practical, compassionate strategies that can make everyday life easier for both children and families.
Suitable for:
Parents, guardians, care givers, and anyone supporting a child or young person with a PDA profile or significant demand avoidant behaviours.
Facilitated by Dr. Dorothy Armstrong, Occupational Therapist
Come along to learn, connect, and gain practical tools to support your child's wellbeing and development.
