A giant golden statue of President Donald Trump, shown without any clothes, is now on display inside a building of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, and the artist says it is meant as a warning about the damage he sees in Trump's leadership.
The sculpture is titled "Orange Plague" and is also called the "King of Injustice." It stands about 8.5 feet tall and is covered in 23-carat gold leaf. Trump is portrayed seated on the shoulders of a smaller, clothed man, with scales of justice in one hand and a long golf club in the other. The golf ball is made to look like the globe. It sits at one of the busiest crossings between two Parliament buildings.
The words on its plinth read: "I am sitting on the back of a man. He is sinking under my burden. I will do anything to help him. Except stepping down from his back."
Danish artist Jens Galschiot drew on the fairy tale of the emperor who parades n*ked while everyone around him is too afraid to say so, until a child finally does. Galschiot said Trump represents "one of the greatest threats to the rules-based world order, democratic values and our common effort to solving the climate crisis."
The exhibition is hosted by Per Clausen, a Danish member of the European Parliament from the Left group. He has said "we cannot accept living in fear and self-censorship" and that he is not worried about how Trump will respond. In his words: "If someone is so thin-skinned that they cannot tolerate this sculpture being exhibited in the European Parliament, then they have no place on the world stage."
The statue stays in Strasbourg through Thursday. It is then expected to travel to the United Nations climate conference, known as COP31, in Turkey next month.
