Researchers at Trinity College Dublin are looking for five people living with Parkinson's to take part in a new research project exploring how environmental factors may influence the condition.

Participants will take part in two interactive workshops during September and October 2026, either in person at Trinity College Dublin or online via Zoom. No previous research experience is needed, and participants will receive a €50 gift voucher as a thank you for their time.

The study is open to people across Ireland, with participants from Dublin, Cork and Limerick especially encouraged to apply.

This may be of interest. We were running 9 different FREE weekly classes ourselves as well as daily online classes by Parkinson's Ireland Many classes are now on a break for the summer as attendances dip and trainers and attendees spend time with their families. We would love to keep going and to organise more exercise classes around Cork for September but we only have limited funding from our own fundraising. We have tried several times to obtain lottery grants to no avail. Useful exercise classes throughout Cork which you can attend for a fee include PD rebel warriors at 12 on Tuesdays and wednesdays in UCC Mardyke Arena. Exwell classes in various GAA halls to which you can be referred by your GP, neurogymns to which you can be referred by the Physiotherapy centre in your local primary care centre. Targeted Exercise is critical to slow Parkinsons symptoms progression.

This post by Parkinsons UK refers to probably one of the most common and controversial questions we get asked and sadly a question that is often forgotten on diagnosis. Driving is so important first and foremost from a safety perspective but conversely as driving can be so important for work, independence, family relations and personal confidence. It is however not a right but a privilege. Safety and care for others is the priority. The approach here in Ireland is broadly similar except that there is no automatic assessment or re-test by the licensing authority and our helpline number is 1800 359 359. We had a wonderful presentation from Tomas in Southern Mobility Services at our March information meeting. You should tell your motor insurer immediately on diagnosis of Parkinsons and/ or certain other stated medical conditions such as sleep apnoea. In fact you should ring your insurer after your diagnosis in the car before you turn on your engine! You will need to also ring your GP to make an appointment as your insurer will no doubt ask for a letter from your GP confirming they believe you are fit to drive. You will also need to ask your GP to complete a medical report form following a brief physical assessment and discussion so that you can then submit this to the National Driver licence service for a new 1 year or 3 year licence. You will need to do this on every further renewal. More information is available here

If your GP is uncomfortable in certifying you as fit to drive a service such as Southern Mobility and I am sure other similar services might be able to assist in carrying out a private assessment and providing a report. This is a difficult and important decision and also highlights the importance of people obtaining a prompt diagnosis which is currently often delayed by the shortage of neurologists in certain regions. The golden rule is of course to never drive if it is not safe to do so. If you feel drowsy because of medication or Parkinsons- DON'T DRIVE. Use public transport or get a lift. If you are mid- journey pull over safely and change drivers or take a nap for so long as you need until you are safe to drive. Stay safe and well🙏
