Shine A Light Suicide & Mental Health Awareness Su***de Awareness & Prevention, and the promotion of Positive Mental Health CLG

Shine A Light is made up of several highly motivated local people and representatives of both statutory and voluntary services. The establishment of Shine a Light for those involved represents a movement toward promotion of speaking openly and directly about su***de and related issues. The main aim of the group is to continually work toward lowering the incidence of su***de in the communities represented and increase awareness around mental health and su***de. It is the core belief of Shine a Light that community groups have a vital role to play in su***de prevention work and that it is simply not possible to progress any national level agenda without strong community engagement and active support. Since its establishment Shine a Light Su***de Awareness Group has been continually growing and expanding while looking at ways of building supports which are easy to access and are affordable to the communities it serves. Shine a Light Su***de and Mental Health Awareness CLG provide the following local services:
counselling at Low cost ; through the Coisceim Counselling service, provision of SafeTALK and ASIST Su***de Awareness Training, the rolling out of bereavement support groups in communities and sign posting people to supports offered by other organisations. Ongoing promotion of positive mental health in the community through the use of information wallet cards, posters and leaflets.

A massive thank you to everyone at the Dillons Cross Project for choosing Shine a Light Su***de & Mental Health Awareness as their chosen charity for the month.

Sonia and Lisa called into the Dillons Cross Project Café yesterday to meet some of the lovely people behind it and were delighted to be presented with €480 raised for Shine a Light.

We’re so grateful for the support and for the welcome we received. €480 is a fantastic amount and will go directly towards supporting the work we do in our community.

And we have to give the café a mention!

The Dillons Cross Project Café is open to the public every Tuesday from 10am–2pm, with coffee, homemade treats, light bites and lunch on the menu. It’s well worth calling in and supporting a brilliant local project while you’re at it.

We’re looking forward to keeping the connection between Shine a Light and the Dillons Cross Project going and after yesterday’s visit, we have a feeling you’ll be seeing a few of us becoming Tuesday regulars!

Light Up the Lough 2026

Following the success of last year, Light Up the Lough is back this October 10th.

Join us at 7pm on Saturday October 10th as we come together once again to 'Light Up The Lough' for World Mental Health Day.

Light a candle in remembrance, for a loved one or for yourself.

There’ll be music, special guests and a chance to come together and show support.

Candles will be provided.

What a performance last night!

This was the third time this particular cast has performed Bring Me Back Alive, and they were excellent. A powerful, emotional performance of a play that still feels as important today as when we first became involved with it.

Around ten years ago, Shine A Light met playwright Patricia McCann in Dublin about bringing Bring Me Back Alive to Cork. From there our collaboration with ActorsVision began, and the play has continued to reach audiences in Cork ever since.

Last night was our third performance this year.

The play deals honestly with su***de and its impact on a group of friends, while also touching on sexuality, drug use, friendship and hope. It can be difficult viewing at times, but there is also humour and warmth throughout.

A huge thank you to the cast and everyone at ActorsVision, and to everyone who joined us last night.

Next year, we want to bring the play to even more schools and communities.

€4,544 raised during our spinathon at Dunnes Stores Bishopstown Court.

We had fantastic support from Clearstream, our charity partners, with a huge number of their team volunteering at our collection tables and getting on the bikes.

A massive thank you also to DIHARD Fitness who supplied the bikes for the weekend and rallied so many of their own gym members to come along and cycle. We genuinely couldn’t have done it without them.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who gave their time over the two days, whether collecting, cycling or simply helping us keep everything running.

And, of course, thank you to the staff and customers of Dunnes Stores Bishopstown Court for their welcome and generosity.

The €4,544 raised is incredible, but so was the level of awareness generated over the weekend. We had so many conversations with people who stopped at the stand to talk, ask questions and find out more about Shine a Light and what we do.

A great result all round, and a genuine team effort.

Written by Patricia McCann, the play follows six friends grappling with the su***de of their friend. It’s an honest look at friendship, grief and mental health, with plenty of humour along the way.

A huge thank you to everyone at Pfizer Ringaskiddy for choosing Shine a Light Su***de & Mental Health Awareness as the beneficiary of their annual Fun Run/Walk.

This year’s event took place on World Su***de Prevention Day, giving the day extra significance for us. More than 100 people took part, raising an incredible €1,830 to support our work across Cork.

For a small charity like ours, €1,830 can make a real difference. To put its impact into perspective, it could cover the cost of over 60 counselling sessions, or help us continue delivering mental health and su***de awareness workshops in schools and community groups across Cork.

Thank you to everyone who walked, ran, organised and donated. Your support will go a long way in helping us continue to show up for people and communities across Cork.

Yesterday we marked World Su***de Prevention Day

We started our day at our Tree of Hope and Friendship Bench joined by Youthreach Knocknaheeny. And we ended our day at Kennedy Quay with Caitríona Twomey and the High Hopes Choir at their World Su***de Prevention Day event.

This year’s theme is 'Changing the Narrative on Su***de' and in his speech on behalf of Shine a Light, Mick brought it back to something at the heart of everything we do..... connection!

Connection with each other. The value of lived experience. And the power of peer-led mental health recovery.
