Can you spot our community members, Pauline and Derek in this photo? Or our Community Health Worker, Paul? Often seen in the garden, the signing of our Local Green Deal with the Lord Mayor was a good reason for them to head over to City Hall! 😄

The Local Green Deal is a commitment by local businesses, non-profits, and sports clubs to advancing their organisations to be more climate concious and make changes to their spaces and practices. 🍏

How will this affect NICHE? We are transitioning to solar and enhancing our food management and composting abilities too 🌳

Come visit the garden to join us on this journey, every Monday to Thursday, 9.30-4.30pm 🫐

👩‍🌾 Today’s Garden Victory 💪🏼 Future-Proofing Our Harvests!
🟢 The gardening group was hard at work today, making sure our future salads are locked in and loaded. We focused on succession planting, the secret weapon to avoiding a "harvest hangover" (where everything ripens at once and then leaves us with empty patches!).
👉🏼Here is what we got into the ground today
Lettuce 🥬 Another round planted so we have a continuous supply of crisp, fresh leaves all season long.
Mustard Greens 🔥 Adding a little peppery kick to our future bowls. These grow fast and look beautiful!
Spring Onions 🧅 Tucked in nicely. You can never have too many, and they are perfect for filling in those smaller gaps.
👐🏼A massive thank you to everyone who showed up, got their hands dirty, and helped out. Many hands make light work, and a much tastier future harvest!
💡 Quick Garden Tip of the Day:
Why Succession Plant? By sowing seeds every 2 to 3 weeks instead of all at once, we ensure a steady, continuous supply of fresh veggies rather than a massive glut followed by a shortage!

☀️ A glorious day at the Hollyhill Knocknaheeny Community Garden! 🌿
The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the garden is absolutely thriving today. There is something so special about watching our community space come alive when the weather is this beautiful. From the busy polytunnel crops to the vibrant blooming flowers, days like today remind us of the incredible power of growing together.
Huge thanks to everyone who dropped by, lent a hand, or simply shared a smile with us today. If you haven’t visited in a while, come on down and soak up the sunshine with us!

Our Sing Your Heart Choir serenading us at the Community Garden given the beautiful day that's in it! We usually meet down in NICHE but couldn't help ourselves on a day like today.

We are taking a summer break from official choir practice but will meet in NICHE every Monday from 1.30-3pm for a cuppa, chats and to do some casual singing 😁

🤝 A Beautiful Exchange🤝 Cork-Cologne Town Twinning at NICHE Community Garden!

🌳Today, we were absolutely delighted to welcome friends from the Cork-Cologne (Köln) Town Twinning Association to the NICHE Community Garden in Knocknaheeny. To celebrate the deep bonds of friendship between our two cities, we took part in a very special gifting ceremony rooted in nature, community, and growth.
🙏🏼We are proud to share that our garden is now home to a wonderful new addition, while a little piece of Knocknaheeny is on its way to Germany!
🍏 The Gift to Cork: The Goose Apple (Der Gänseapfel)
Our visitors presented the garden with a gorgeous Goose Apple tree, which was officially planted today, May 21st, 2026.
👉🏼The History: This unique variety isn't a product of commercial breeding, but a happy accident of nature! Around 1980, it grew as a chance seedling right on the edge of a goose pasture fence at a nursery near Cologne. Because it was protected by the fence, it was left to grow, and it went on to produce delicious, crisp fruit.
🤝Symbolism: Just like its origins, this tree represents resilience, unexpected gifts, and the beauty of letting friendship grow naturally. It is already showing off beautiful white blossoms, promising a fruitful future here in Cork!
🌱 The Gift to Cologne: Our Self-Seeded Hawthorn
In return, the NICHE community presented the delegation with a young, self-seeded Hawthorn tree nurtured right here in our own soil.
🌱The History & Symbolism, Deeply embedded in Irish folklore, the Hawthorn (or Sceach Gheal) is a sacred tree of protection, celebration, and the shifting of seasons. Giving a self-seeded tree means passing on a genuine, wild piece of our local landscape.
🎋It is our hope that this little tree thrives in its new home across the water, serving as a living reminder of the roots we share and the connections we continue to cultivate.
"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow."
🙏🏼 A massive thank you to everyone from the Cork-Cologne Association and our dedicated NICHE community team who made today so memorable.
👉🏼Drop by the garden soon to see the new friendship tree and its commemorative plaque!

Happy World Bee Day! 🌻🐝🍯
The theme 'Bee together for people & the Planet' resonates perfectly with our mission here at the NICHE Health Project, Hollyhill and Knocknaheeny Community Garden
🐝 You can find bees in our garden to help you identify the bees we support, like the Tawny Mining Bee and learn more about the vital role they play in our local ecosystem. 🚶🏼‍♀️Take a walk through the garden and see if you can spot the busy bumblebee on our towering alliums, just like in these photos.
🚩We are committe to education and protecting our planet. When we take care of the bees, they take care of us and our planet’s future.
👉🏼Come visit the garden, enjoy the nature, and ‘bee together’ with us for a healthier community and planet.
