Meitheal Mara

Meitheal Mara Meitheal Mara is an established boatyard & a maritime cultural and education centre in the heart of Cork city, Ireland.

(registered Charity and a company limited by guarantee) Founded in 1993, Meitheal Mara, ‘Community or Workers of the Sea’, is a community boatyard in the heart of Cork city. We are a Company Limited by Guarantee, a registered charity and a nationally-accredited training centre. COMMUNITY WORK & TRAINING
In Meitheal Mara we promote and foster maritime culture and traditional skills, using boatbuild

ing, woodcraft and seamanship as the means to help both groups and individuals to learn, progress and develop. BOAT BUILDING & WOODCRAFT
Meitheal Mara’s workshop is at the heart of what we do. Our workers specialise in building traditional Irish currachs, particularly the magnificent Kerry-style naomhóg and a variation on the 2-person hazel rod currach used on the north coast of Donegal. SEAMANSHIP, ROWING & TRAINING
The ethos of Meitheal Mara is to get people on the water, especially those who would not otherwise have the chance to do so. Young people on our Bádoireacht programme learn how to row, sail or paddle, and to become comfortable with handling boats. They might even build their own currach, or compete in an international seamanship contest in our flagship, the 38-foot Bantry longboat Fionnbarra. MARITIME CULTURE & EVENTS
Meitheal Mara is also actively involved in celebrating Ireland’s rich maritime heritage and in promoting and fostering maritime culture and activities locally and overseas. The high point of Meitheal Mara’s calendar, Ocean to City – Án Ras Mór is Ireland’s largest and most inclusive rowing race, and the anchor for the week-long Cork Harbour Festival each June. With over 660 competitors and hundreds of volunteers on and off the water, we are quite proud of what our little organisation has achieved ☺️
We will be sharing lots of fantastic images from the event over the coming days. In the meantime checkout this video which gives a great snapshot of the grit and determination of our rowers & paddlers on the day.

What a day! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who took part in Ocean to City 2026 and helped create an unforgettable celebration of rowing, paddling, community and Cork Harbour.

This year’s event welcomed over 660 participants across almost 200 entries and four course distances. More than one-third of participants travelled from overseas, joining participants from across Ireland for a fantastic day in Cork Harbour. The Race Hub buzzed throughout the day, crews enjoyed visits aboard the tall ship, and there was no shortage of smiles, stories and fun both on and off the water.

Most importantly, thank you for the patience, positivity and good humour that make Ocean to City such a special event every year. Whether you were chasing a category prize, or were enjoying the experience of completing Ireland’s largest multi-craft race, you helped create an unforgettable day.

We would love to hear how everyone got on! please do leave us comments below so we can pass on the feedback to our big team of hardworking volunteers 💗

And 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀!

The Provisional Prize Winners are now live and include our first round of prize winners. At this stage, only the initial first-prize placings have been allocated. Second- and third-place prizes, along with a range of prize categories to be confirmed (due to the course change), will be announced over the coming days, along with the full race times.

𝗔 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀. 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀. 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀.
Or you realise the path you were on no longer fits.

A Community Employment (CE) scheme can offer a supported space to regroup, build skills, and move forward with confidence.

For the past 25 years, Meitheal Mara has welcomed hundreds of CE participants, offering hands-on experience in the workshop, on the water, in the office, at events and on site. We’re especially proud that four of our current Assistant Managers and Managers began their journey here through CE, with many others going on to further training, employment, or a new direction.

“𝐵𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑀𝑒𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎 𝐶𝐸 𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑚𝑒 𝑔𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑚𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑚𝑦 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑎 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑟 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒” — Deirdre, former CE participant.

CE is about creating space to move forward — differently.
We currently have several CE opportunities available — in the Meitheal Mara workshop and on the water with our Bádóireacht team. Details: https://meithealmara.ie/recruitment/

If you (or someone you know) might be eligible and curious, we’d love to have a conversation.
📩 Get in touch with Catherine on 021 4316813 / [email protected] or see meithealmara.ie for current CE opportunities.
