Mothers First

Mothers First Founded in 2004, We target malnourished Pregnant Mothers with food which increases birth weight What do Mothers do? How does it work? Mothers First Costs.

Mothers First has completely evolved its approach since its foundation in 2004. The evolution from the treatment of severe malnutrition in children to preventing it from happening in the first place. Mothers First recognised that the high rates of malnutrition experienced by mothers during pregnancy were directly linked to babies being born malnourished. A baby who is born malnourished very often

will remain malnourished. These babies are often referred to as weak babies and fail to thrive. In the community that we work in, we screen all pregnant mothers for the clinical signs of malnutrition. We know if they are malnourished their unborn baby will also be experiencing malnutrition. To counteract this, we provide a direct food package for the mother during pregnancy and 4 months post-delivery. The package consists of 8 kg of high-quality local food. It also includes a daily supply of essential micronutrients such as Iron and Folic Acid and Calcium. A malnourished mother eating a more nutrient-rich diet will directly help improve her babies nutrition status at birth. On average, the intervention given every month will improve the birth weight by approximately 200g. While this might not seem a lot we must consider that birth weight frequently are less the 2.5kg (5.5 pounds)

How much does it cost to run the program? On average, it costs 10 euros per month to deliver the intervention to each mother. The average length of time a mother is on the program is 9 months equals 90 Euro. Every gram counts.

90 Euro for 200g of a pure human being. Mothers First is run by a small group of volunteers, and so we have no administration costs here in Ireland. Each donation goes directly to the point of most need. Pat Mc Mahon

πŸ’Š Iron & folic acid supplements
🀱 Maternal nutrition support
πŸ‘Ά Healthier mothers and babies

We're looking for 200 people willing to donate just €5 a month and become part of a movement creating lasting change.

πŸ’šπŸŒ What if you could own a small share in something truly beautiful?

Research published by The Lancet found that providing nutrient-dense food to malnourished pregnant mothers leads to safer pregnancies, healthier babies, and better lifelong outcomes. 🀱✨

A well-nourished baby has a stronger start in life, better health, and greater opportunities for the future. 🌱

In March 2026, Mothers First brought this life-changing program to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, supporting 38 mothers every month. Now, we're looking for 200 compassionate people to donate just €5 per month to help sustain and grow this flagship program across Africa. ❀️

πŸ’Ά €5 a month can help provide:
πŸ₯— Nutritious food support
πŸ’Š Essential supplements
🀱 Maternal nutrition guidance
πŸ‘Ά Healthier mothers and babies

Every donation helps break the cycle of malnutrition and creates a stronger future for families and communities.

πŸ™Œ Be part of something beautifully good.

Mothers First Supporting Vulnerable Families
Mothers First continues to support vulnerable communities by improving access to safe sanitation. We have successfully constructed five toilets in the IDAAN IDP Camp, helping to promote dignity, hygiene, and better health conditions for displaced families, especially women and children.

30/12/2025

MothersFirst responded to a request from five households with persons with disabilities, selected from a total of twenty households residing in IIDAAN IDP settlement, located approximately 20 km north of Hargeisa. These households requested support for the construction of sanitation facilities, as they lacked access to toilets, a situation that poses serious public health and hygiene risks.
Visual documentation of the completed sanitation facilities will be shared separately. This intervention was supported by MothersFirst in collaboration with a local partner, MAGAN Network.
