Mothers First

Mothers First Founded in 2004, We target malnourished Pregnant Mothers with food which increases birth weight What do Mothers do? How does it work? Mothers First Costs.

Mothers First has completely evolved its approach since its foundation in 2004. The evolution from the treatment of severe malnutrition in children to preventing it from happening in the first place. Mothers First recognised that the high rates of malnutrition experienced by mothers during pregnancy were directly linked to babies being born malnourished. A baby who is born malnourished very often

will remain malnourished. These babies are often referred to as weak babies and fail to thrive. In the community that we work in, we screen all pregnant mothers for the clinical signs of malnutrition. We know if they are malnourished their unborn baby will also be experiencing malnutrition. To counteract this, we provide a direct food package for the mother during pregnancy and 4 months post-delivery. The package consists of 8 kg of high-quality local food. It also includes a daily supply of essential micronutrients such as Iron and Folic Acid and Calcium. A malnourished mother eating a more nutrient-rich diet will directly help improve her babies nutrition status at birth. On average, the intervention given every month will improve the birth weight by approximately 200g. While this might not seem a lot we must consider that birth weight frequently are less the 2.5kg (5.5 pounds)

How much does it cost to run the program? On average, it costs 10 euros per month to deliver the intervention to each mother. The average length of time a mother is on the program is 9 months equals 90 Euro. Every gram counts.

90 Euro for 200g of a pure human being. Mothers First is run by a small group of volunteers, and so we have no administration costs here in Ireland. Each donation goes directly to the point of most need. Pat Mc Mahon

Stronger Mothers. Stronger Futures. ❤️

For more than 20 years, Mothers First has been working to prevent malnutrition before it starts.

Our journey began in Northern India, treating children suffering from malnutrition. In 2015, we changed our approach: what if we could prevent malnutrition by supporting mothers during pregnancy?

That simple but powerful idea has grown into life-changing work and now, into Africa.

🇨🇩In the Democratic Republic of Congo, we are currently running a 12-month pilot programme supporting 41 mothers every month. We urgently need to fund the final six months.

Just €20 supports one mother for one month providing food, supplements and the delivery of the programme.

🇸🇴 In Somaliland, we are listening to communities and supporting locally led initiatives, including a birthing and learning centre, microloans, shelter and plans for dry-land agriculture and kitchen gardens.

Every donation helps us learn, grow and develop models that can be replicated across communities.

💛 Together, we can prevent malnutrition before it starts.

Last week, we introduced you to the Learning and Community Center in Nasahablood C, Somaliland. 🤍*

Established by Mothers First in partnership with MAGAN Network, the center has already enrolled *30 women*, providing access to Somali literacy, numeracy, and basic life and management skills.

But why is community-based education so important?

According to UNICEF Somalia's 2022 Somaliland Education Brief, the female literacy rate in Somaliland is approximately *23.2%, while around **30.6% of children aged 6–18 are out of school*.

These statistics are national context rather than outcomes of this project. They highlight the wider barriers to education and the importance of bringing accessible learning opportunities into communities.

For the women of Nasahablood C, learning is already underway.

*30 women have taken the first step. And this is only the beginning.*

Earlier this year, we shared the journey of establishing a learning and community centre in Nasahablood C (Jin iyo Insi) Village, approximately 22 km from Hargeisa city. Today, we are excited to share how this space is being used to create meaningful opportunities for women in the community.

With the support of Mothers First and in partnership with MAGAN Network, the centre has become a safe and welcoming place where women can come together to learn, connect, and support one another.

Through the women’s education programme, 30 participants are now developing essential skills in reading and writing, basic mathematics, and life skills. These opportunities are helping women overcome barriers caused by limited access to education, while building confidence and encouraging greater participation within their communities.

Education is more than learning — it is a pathway to independence, empowerment, and a stronger future for families and communities. ✨

We are proud to support initiatives that create lasting change and provide women with the tools they need to thrive.

💙 Together, we can continue creating opportunities for women and communities around the world.

Behind every healthy baby is a mother who was given the support she needed at the right time. 💛

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mothers First works with women at every stage of pregnancy and early motherhood. Some are being assessed for the programme, some are receiving nutrient-rich Super Cereal and essential supplements, and others have already welcomed healthy babies into the world.

Every baby featured in this reel has benefited from this targeted maternal nutrition programme—a reminder of the life-changing impact that timely care and support can have.

Together, we can help more mothers experience healthy pregnancies and give more babies the strongest possible start in life.
