Meet Our Speaker | Dr. rer. nat. Sabrina Gohlke 🇩🇪

We’re delighted to welcome Dr. rer. nat. Sabrina Gohlke, researcher in adipose tissue biology and metabolic disease at the German Institute for Nutrition Research, to the National Lipoedema Conference 2026.

Dr. Gohlke’s research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying lipoedema. As a research collaborator of Dr. Ghods, she has contributed significantly to translational research exploring adipocyte hypertrophy, inflammation, macrophage involvement and interstitial fibrosis within lipoedema tissue.

Newest Basic Research Insights into Lipedema

What is happening within lipoedema tissue at a molecular and cellular level? In this session, Dr. Gohlke will share the newest basic research insights into the biological pathways that may contribute to disease progression and the development of symptoms.

Her work helps bridge the gap between laboratory science and clinical understanding, providing valuable insight into the complex biological processes associated with lipoedema.

We’re delighted to welcome Susie Birney, Executive Director of the Irish Coalition for People Living with Obesity, to the National Lipoedema Conference 2026.

Susie is an experienced patient advocate who works nationally and across Europe to improve understanding of obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease. Drawing on her own lived experience, she champions compassionate, evidence-based care, people-first language and the reduction of weight stigma in healthcare and wider society.

🎤 Susie will present:
Obesity & Lipoedema

What happens when obesity and lipoedema coexist, and how can we ensure that patients receive appropriate, respectful care? In this session, Susie will share the patient perspective on stigma, dignity and the need for compassionate care pathways that support people living with complex chronic conditions.

Meet Our Speaker | Dr. Norina Cornelius 🇩🇪

We’re delighted to welcome Dr. Norina Cornelius, a specialist in anaesthesiology and emergency medicine, to the National Lipoedema Conference 2026.

Dr. Cornelius is a senior physician in the Department of Anaesthesiology at Ernst von Bergmann Hospital Bad Belzig, Germany, where she plays a vital role in ensuring the intraoperative safety of Dr. Ghods’ patients.

Her clinical expertise includes perioperative anaesthetic management for complex and large-volume lipoedema surgery. She has also contributed to international lipoedema education, sharing important insights into anaesthetic strategies for large-volume liposuction.

Lipoedema Surgery from an Anaesthesiologist’s Perspective

Safe lipoedema surgery depends on much more than the surgical procedure itself. In this session, Dr. Cornelius will explore lipoedema surgery from an anaesthesiologist’s perspective, including the planning, monitoring and patient-safety considerations involved in complex and large-volume procedures.

Meet Our Speaker | Dr. Apostolos Siafliakis 🇬🇷

We’re delighted to welcome Dr. Apostolos Siafliakis, double board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of Esea Clinic, to the National Lipoedema Conference 2026.

With more than 15 years of clinical and surgical experience across Greece and Germany, Dr. Siafliakis is Director of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Lipoedema and Post-Bariatric Surgery at the European Interbalkan Medical Center in Thessaloniki. He is also Director of Esea Clinic and Chief Surgeon of the International Lipoedema Surgical Center.

🎤 Dr. Siafliakis will present:
Management of Lipedema in Patients with Severe Obesity (BMI >50 kg/m²)

How can lipoedema be safely and effectively managed in patients living with severe obesity? In this session, Dr. Siafliakis will explore the clinical and surgical considerations involved in treating patients with a BMI above 50 kg/m².

Drawing on his extensive experience in lipoedema reduction surgery, high-volume liposuction, post-bariatric surgery and perioperative safety, he will discuss the complexities of treatment planning and the importance of an individualised, multidisciplinary approach.
