We’re looking forward to coming together again for the 15th Gathering of Cork City Community Education Providers.

This year’s theme is:

“Education Builds Community / Community Builds Education”

The Gathering is always a valuable opportunity to meet others involved in Community Education, share experiences, hear from practitioners and learners, and reflect together on the important role Community Education plays in creating connection, inclusion and belonging.

There will be time for conversation, reflection, a mindful activity and, of course, plenty of opportunities to catch up and make new connections.

If you are involved in Community Education in Cork City, we would be delighted to see you there.

Great to see our Coisceim counsellors back together for the recent SHEP Gathering.

Mary Crowley and Carmel O’Leary (SHEP) with our guest speakers, Cate O’Sullivan and Mirka Frommenwiler. Cate and Mirka set up the ADHD Family Network and do incredible work supporting families across Ireland. It was fantastic to learn from them and connect as a team.

A fantastic milestone for accessibility!🌟

A Magical Singing Event with Lea Morris

Save the date: Monday, 28 September 2026, from 6pm to 10pm at the Meditation Centre, Bessborough.

SHEP Choir proudly presents the amazing and magical Lea Morris for one night only.

Lea’s musical roots lie in gospel and community song, where she first discovered the power of voices raised together. Drawing on gospel, soul, folk and global influences, her songs are rich, accessible and deeply human.

SHEP Choir invites anyone interested to experience Lea’s ear-taught approach to harmony singing, learning by listening, moving and singing together. The focus is on connection, groove and shared sound rather than performance.

This event is subsidised by the Stella Gallagher Natural Voice Trust. Cash donations to also assist with costs (10 euros or whatever you can afford ) are welcome on the night .

There are still places remaining on the SHEP Reflective Practice for Practitioners courses this Autumn 2026. We have extended the application closing date to Tuesday, 15th September 2026.

One course will take place in Cork City, one in Waterford, and two courses will be delivered online, making them accessible from anywhere.

The courses are highly subsidised and offer a valuable opportunity for practitioners to develop their reflective practice skills.

🌍 Jim, Abigail and Ammar recently took part in the World Community Development Conference 2026 in Glasgow. Ammar, from Sahakarmi Samaj, SHEP’s international learning partner in Nepal, and Abigail led well-received sessions exploring the use of a Freirean Code to support community inquiry and planning, climate resilience, and participative group singing.

They also met with the Irish Consul to Scotland, Jerry O’Donovan, and discussed the partnership and the importance of Irish Aid funding in supporting these programmes.

This month, we are sharing The Facilitators, written by Una Coakley in October 1987.

Through the gentle imagery of gardening, sowing and reaping, the poem reflects the attentiveness, patience and understanding at the heart of facilitation.

Almost four decades later, its image of facilitators as “gentle gardeners” continues to resonate with SHEP’s approach to learning, personal growth and supportive relationships.

We hope you enjoy this reflection from SHEP’s history.
