🌍 Jim, Abigail and Ammar recently took part in the World Community Development Conference 2026 in Glasgow. Ammar, from Sahakarmi Samaj, SHEP’s international learning partner in Nepal, and Abigail led well-received sessions exploring the use of a Freirean Code to support community inquiry and planning, climate resilience, and participative group singing.

They also met with the Irish Consul to Scotland, Jerry O’Donovan, and discussed the partnership and the importance of Irish Aid funding in supporting these programmes.

Poem of the Month | August

This month, we are sharing The Facilitators, written by Una Coakley in October 1987.

Through the gentle imagery of gardening, sowing and reaping, the poem reflects the attentiveness, patience and understanding at the heart of facilitation.

Almost four decades later, its image of facilitators as “gentle gardeners” continues to resonate with SHEP’s approach to learning, personal growth and supportive relationships.

We hope you enjoy this reflection from SHEP’s history.

Jess Bowen and Liam McCarthy on Friday 22nd May (9:30 am – 11:30am) attended a meeting of the Healthy Waterford Practitioners Network in Dunhill Multi Educational Centre, Waterford and inspirational hub of educational and social enterprise.

SHEP had an opportunity to showcase the Reflective Practice for Practitioners course that has been funded over recent years by Healthy Ireland Waterford, including a further round in Autumn 2026. This has been a very rewarding collaboration.

July invites us to slow down, notice the world around us, and ask gentler questions of ourselves.

Mary Oliver’s “The Summer Day” is a beautiful reminder to pay attention — to nature, to the present moment, and to the preciousness of our own lives.

This month, may we make space for wonder, reflection, and the simple gift of being here. 🌿☀️

Some of the participants on the SHEP Foundation (Part 1) Programme which was delivered in Limerick City (at the Redemptorist Centre) and was completed in May.

The main Facilitators were Clair Lalor and Geraldine Flanagan. This course is made possible because of support from the Mid-West Drug and Alcohol Forum (one of our key local partners, along with Limerick and Clare ETB) and the Perry and Sandy Massie Foundation.

As part of a collaboration with a large number of partners SHEP has been able to deliver the Foundation (Part 1) Programme in Limerick every year since 2010.
