Development Pamoja Ltd We are an Irish-registered charity (CHY 19370) working with disadvantaged communities in rural Kenya. Visit our website: www.developmentpamoja.org

We work to improve living standards and enable self-sufficiency through community-based cooperative initiatives. We are an Irish Registered Charity Chy No 19370 working in the remote areas of Mogotio and Rongai, 42 kms from the Nakuru. Our work focuses on providing primary healthcare, improving farm practices and community support (education, inclusion programs, daily living improvements, finance

schemes, emergency aid). We collaborate closely with the community and regularly evaluate all projects to ensure that the services we provide are valuable, relevant and efficient. Our programs are constantly evolving as we build on our past successes.

100% of all money donated goes directly to fund our projects in Kenya - general donations are not used to fund salaries or administration costs.

We are currently experiencing our rainy season. With it, we always see an increase in the number of farmers who want dams to be lined. This year is no different. We started this program in 2022 with the aim of lining 100 dams in 10 years. This month, we have passed 40 dams lined for 40 farmers. Combined, they harvest over 8 million litres of water. Of those 40 dams lined, over 80% have been lined by loans taken by women through their savings groups. The search for water is traditionally the work of women, and they know acutely the benefits of having water for the dry season. While we primarily focus on securing water for their livestock, the water is also used for other income generating activities such as growing vegetables. While some dam liner is provided at a subsidised price, the vast majority is provided as a long-term loan, with repayment done through the farmers' savings groups. It has proven to be hugely successful due to the commitment of the women we work with. We would especially like to thank the embassy of Ireland in Nairobi and the DairyMis farming discussion group in Ireland, who provide us with the funding to make all this possible. So far this month we have lined 3 ponds. Thankfully, April also sees children on their Easter holidays, which has enabled our chairman Karanja Mawe to keep an eye on our work. He likes to portray himself as a man of the people, so as you can see in the photos, he isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Maith an buachaill!

Schools are currently on their Easter holidays. Before they closed Mary, our wonderful doctor visited a number of schools to provide sanitary towels to school going girls and conduct health talks. As always, we are indebted to the support of .are.riley, ensuring this project is now entering its sixth year. In the week before Easter, we combined this activity with the dispersion of water tanks to a number of schools we work with. We are very grateful to Fr. Francis McAuliffe, together with a charity shop in Kilrush Co. Clare who donated the money to purchase these tanks. Fr. Frank gave us the money to build our first clinic in 2014. Twelve years later, we are very grateful that he continues to support us.

As the sun sets on 2025, we’d like to thank everyone who supported us over the past year. A special thanks as well to all those we work with in Kenya — without your involvement and trust, our work wouldn’t have any meaning.

2025 saw us lose a few too many close friends, both here in Kenya and back in Ireland. They and their families are in our thoughts as the year comes to a close.

Wishing everyone connected with DP a happy New Year.

Today is Jamhuri Day in Kenya, a day that quite literally means “Republic Day” and marks Kenya's hard-won independence. It’s also the beginning of the Christmas season.

While our work is centred on helping people become self-sufficient, some of those we work with are among the most vulnerable in society. Each Christmas, we prepare food hampers for the elderly and for people with disabilities.

Like every year, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to CASA in Ireland, and to Rachel Irungu and friends, for helping us gather food and clothing for the disabled community. For the elderly, we rely on the monthly donations from all of you who give regularly and for that, we are truly grateful.

It wouldn’t be right to show the people who receive these parcels, so instead here are a few photos of our joint CEO, Karanja Mawe, lending a hand as our wonderful driver, Daniel, loads up the tractor.

Happy Jamhuri Day to all in Kenya.

We recently held an open day on our demonstration farm, giving local farmers a chance to see first-hand the benefits of forage-based systems for dairy farming. The day was part of our ongoing work with the Dairy Kenya–Ireland Project, and we’re very grateful to our partners Self Help Africa, KALRO, and Baraka College for the support they afforded to us on the day.

A big thank-you as well to Renny from Land O’Lakes, and to Jorum and Geoffrey from Tulaga Farmers’ Cooperative, for joining us and sharing their insights. And of course, sincere thanks to all the farmers who took the time to come along.

Most of all, we want to acknowledge the two DP team members who made the day happen.
Cosmos Tolol, who has been with us just over a year, has already become a real asset to the organisation.
And Mzee Nicholas Nyaoma, our farm extension officer for the past six years, whose commitment to helping farmers build a dignified income in tough, semi-arid conditions is nothing short of inspiring. Nicholas consistently goes above and beyond in his work, and we are incredibly lucky to have him on our team.

Thank you both—and thanks to everyone who helped make the day such a success.

We were delighted to welcome members of the DairyMis farmer discussion group to Development Pamoja recently. Evelyn and Tom Walsh, Geraldine and Tom Dunne, and Lucy and Donald Bateman spent 11 days with us, taking the time to see the work their support has helped along and also engaged with a number of our other programs.

DairyMis have been funding our projects for six years now, giving us the freedom to put the money where it’s most needed. For us, that’s mainly been water security and, more recently, biogas systems. There’s good reason for this. Most of the farm work in our area falls to women, and a huge chunk of their day is spent fetching water and firewood before they even get near feeding or milking cows.

It was lovely for the DairyMis group to hear directly from the women farmers about how simple changes—water tanks, ponds, and biogas units—have cut hours of heavy work out of their day.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone in DairyMis, not only for the support, but for listening to the farmers themselves and allowing the farmers to come up with solutions they know will work best for them.

Geraldine said at one of our forums, *Ní neart go cur le chéile*. Our partnership with DairyMis has shown the truth of that over the past six years.

Schools in Kenya close for the long holiday this week. In preparation for children being home for the next two months, we visited a number of schools over the past two weeks, dispensing sanitary towels. This program is over four years old now, and its impact has been huge. It's not simply giving out sanitary products. It has opened our eyes to the number of social problems that exist in the communities we work with. It has allowed us shape other social initiatives we undertake and helped us appreciate the very challenging conditions some girls face while simply trying to attend school. As always none of this is possible without .are.riley WeAreRiley and we really are so grateful. We also appreciate our community health volunteers and the ministry of Health and Toro who has helped out hugely this year. But in particular, thank you to our doctor Mary, who has made this project her own. She hasn't just grown the project she's also grown with it herself and we couldn't think of a better role model for the girls she serves. Maith an bhean.

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Bernadette O'Brien of Teagasc and Dr. Deirdre Hennessy of University College Cork to Development Pamoja last week. The name might be a give away but Deirdre also happens to be James's sister and we were very proud for her to see our work. Both Bernadette and Deirdre also visited other project partners in the Dairy Kenya project, namely the Kenya Agriculture and Livestock Organistion and Tulagaa Cooperative. Many thanks to Michael and Collins of Self Help Africa for coordinating the trip.
A special word for the staff of Baraka College and in particular their principal Pamela Nasimiyu and Dr. John King'au. Baraka hosted all members of this dairy project despite suffering an immeasurable loss last week. Rest in Peace Br. Tony Dolan. Everyone who works in agriculture in Nakuru County is aware of the immense impact you had on farming communities. You also had a profound impact on Development Pamoja. Above all you were a friend and we will miss you terribly. Ar dheis DĂ© go raibh a n-anam.

In the past year, as part of our farming programs, we have organised farmers' discussion groups in the various villages we work in. Each month, farmers visit one farm in the area, and we, as Development Pamoja, attend with Nicholas, our extension officer. Last week our group in the village of Sarambei met. What we like about this group is they are all women. This month, we were at the farm of Esther Atchale. Attached is a short video of her explaining her feeding program for her cows along with a few photos of the group. Thanks to our extension officer Nicholas for organising these events ably assisted by Cosmos. Above all, thanks to all the farmers, particularly the women who attend these events and have made this program so successful. And thanks Esther for hosting us. You're a legend.
