Members of the public recently had the opportunity to step behind the laboratory doors at the Bernal Institute and the Limerick Digital Cancer Research Centre at the University of Limerick.

Across six interactive stations, visitors explored the full journey of cancer research, including:
🧪 Testing new therapies
🧬 3D bioprinting
💻 Computational biology
⚙️ Medical devices

Along the way, they met the researchers, clinicians, engineers and patient advocates working together to better understand cancer and develop new approaches to its diagnosis and treatment.

The showcase highlighted how collaboration across disciplines is driving new discoveries and bringing us closer to new, better, smarter, kinder and more effective treatments and diagnostics for people with cancer.

A huge thank you to all the researchers, staff and visitors who made the event such a success.Together, we are bringing people closer to the impact of research and helping to .

Research like this is only possible through support and funding, helping to bring us closer to new, better, smarter, kinder and more effective treatments and diagnostics for people with cancer.

We are delighted to see Professor Kevin Harrington's latest research attracting international attention and to hear that the presentation of these promising new clinical trial results will be presented in Chicago at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) tomorrow.

The findings suggest that a novel triple-action treatment, amivantamab, may offer new hope for people with advanced head and neck cancers whose disease has stopped responding to existing treatments. Early results showed significant tumour responses in a group of people with very limited treatment options.

Professor Harrington is a member of Breakthrough Cancer Research's International Scientific Advisory Committee, and we are proud to see his continued leadership helping to advance new, smarter and more effective approaches to cancer treatment.

This is another powerful reminder of why investment in world-class cancer research matters.

Congratulations to Professor Harrington and all involved in this important international collaboration. 👏

“No tan is worth this.”

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a life changed forever.

As proud members of the Coalition Against Sunbeds, Breakthrough Cancer Research is supporting calls for a total ban on sunbeds in Ireland.

Gill's powerful story is a reminder that melanoma is not just one of the fastest rising cancers in Ireland, it is also one of the most preventable.

Research continues to improve how we understand, diagnose and treat cancer. Prevention remains one of the most effective ways to reduce cancer risk in the first place.

We encourage everyone to watch, share, and help raise awareness.

‘I used sunbeds when I was younger and now I’m paying the price living with stage 4 melanoma.’ These are the words of Gill Costelloe, patient advocate with Melanoma Support Ireland.

Today, we are proud to stand alongside fellow members of the Coalition Against Sunbeds in calling for a total ban on sunbeds in Ireland.

Sunbeds directly cause skin cancer. Using them before the age of 35 increases melanoma risk by 75%.

Yet approximately 120,000 people in Ireland still use sunbeds, including young people despite legislation prohibiting their use under the age of 18.

The number of people diagnosed with melanoma is expected to double by 2045.

This is a public health issue and a preventable one.

We welcome the recommendation of the Department of Health’s Sunbed Working Group and support calls for a full ban on all sunbeds, including those in residential settings.

Research helps us better understand, diagnose and treat cancer. Prevention helps reduce risk before cancer ever begins.

We’re highlighting research that is working to improve how powerful cancer treatments can reach and target solid tumours.

CAR-T cell therapy has already transformed treatment for some blood cancers, including leukaemia. But this success has not yet been widely replicated in solid tumours, such as colorectal and ovarian cancers.

Mark McInerney, a PhD researcher at University of Galway University of Galway, was awarded the Geraldine Foley PhD Scholarship in partnership with Breakthrough Cancer Research.

Working under the supervision of Dr. Aideen Ryan and Prof. Michael O’Dwyer, Mark’s research is exploring how CAR-T cell therapy could be made more effective for solid tumours.

CAR-T cell therapy works by taking a person’s own immune cells, engineering them to recognise cancer cells, and then returning them to the body.

However, solid tumours can create a protective environment around themselves, making it difficult for CAR-T cells to reach, enter, and target the cancer effectively.

By genetically engineering CAR-T cells to recognise stress signals released by tumours Mark’s research aims to help more CAR-T cells detect and home in on solid tumours

The research we fund helps find new, better, smarter, kinder, and more effective treatments and diagnostics for people with cancer.
