📸 Yesterday our team, volunteers and young leaders took part in Child Protection & Safeguarding Training at The Hut.

Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do, helping to ensure that young people can take part in our activities in a safe, supportive and positive environment.

A special mention to some of our young leaders who once attended The Hut as participants and have now progressed into volunteering roles. It’s fantastic to see them continuing their journey and completing their child protection training as they take on new responsibilities within the project. 💙

Thanks to Miriam & Ross for facilitating the training 🤝

We’re delighted to see Hut member Alex Murray proudly wearing the CDYS and The Hut logos at his recent MMA competition.

Alex first got involved with The Hut (Youth Work Ireland Cork at the time) through our weekly Teen Gym group before joining soccer and getting involved in many of the opportunities and activities on offer. More recently, he was part of our 2026 DiscoverEU Erasmus+ trip, helping recruit other young people to take part in an unforgettable journey across Europe.

When asked about his journey, Alex said:

“I’ve come a long way from a €1 Gym & Swim in LeisureWorld with Joe.”

That quote says it all. From a young teenager attending local youth activities to stepping into the MMA cage, Alex’s journey shows what can happen when young people are given opportunities, support and encouragement along the way.

We’re proud to support Alex and grateful that he chose to represent The Hut and CDYS on fight night.

Well done Alex, and best of luck for whatever comes next! 👏🥊

The Hut Teen Gym and Soccer groups continue to run every week (currently on a summer break and returning in September). These groups promote positive mental and physical health and are supported by the HSE North Cork Community Work Department Health Action Zone. Alex’s journey is a great example of the impact these opportunities can have on young people over time.

Alex was also a participant on our 2026 DiscoverEU Erasmus+ project, made possible through funding from DiscoverEU and Erasmus+ through Leargas. The work of The Hut UBU Youth Project is supported by CDYS Youth Work Ireland, Cork ETB Youth Services, the National Lottery and the Department of Education and Youth.

We are always looking for new opportunities, partnerships and support to help us expand what we can offer young people in our community. If you would like to support our work, please get in touch with Joe at [email protected].

This week is Traveller Pride Week!

Article 30 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child says that all children have the right to practice their own culture, language and religion.

This is an important right for Traveller children in Ireland and all minority groups.

The OCO wants the UNCRC to be made part of Irish law so children’s best interests are always considered when policy decisions are being made that impact them.

🇪🇺 European Youth Week is happening this week — it’s all about celebrating young people across Europe, giving them a voice, and highlighting the opportunities that are out there through programmes like Erasmus+. It’s a reminder of how important it is that young people get chances to travel, learn, and connect beyond their own community.

With that in mind, it’s a good time to look back at our DiscoverEU trip back in January with a group from the HUT.

We were lucky to be involved at the very start of DiscoverEU, and it’s something we’ve built on over the years. We’ve been involved in Erasmus+ and European youth work since 2016 here at the HUT.

This trip itself had a bit of everything, new places, different cultures, figuring out trains, getting lost, and plenty of good moments along the way. It pushed young people outside their comfort zones and gave them an experience they won’t forget anytime soon.

Some of the words they used themselves: exciting, eye-opening, stressful, fun, educational, unforgettable

European Youth Week 2026 takes place from 24 April to 1 May 2026. This year’s edition is dedicated to solidarity and fairness as we celebrate 30 years of volunteering in Europe. All our Erasmus+ projects are supported by .ireland &
