☀️ THE HUT – SUMMER CLOSURE ☀️

After a very busy summer, The Hut Youth Project will close from Monday 17th August to allow our staff team to take their summer holidays and some well-earned time off.

🏠 The Hut will reopen on Monday 7th September.

📅 Most of our regular youth groups will return from Monday 14th September, with our Music & Rap Project returning on Tuesday 22nd September. 🎤🎶

During the closure, our phones, emails and social media messages will not be monitored. We’ll respond to any messages as soon as possible after we return.

☀️ What a finish to our Summer Schemes! ☀️

Our Senior Summer Scheme welcomed over 30 young people for an unforgettable week of adventure, fun and new friendships. It was fantastic to see so many regular members alongside lots of new faces getting involved.

The week included trips to Fota Wildlife Park, Garretstown Beach, The Crucible for pool and snooker, Escape Rooms, and we finished on a high with an incredible day at Ballyhass Adventure Centre.

Summer Scheme is about so much more than the activities. Throughout the week, young people built confidence, made new friends, developed teamwork and communication skills, and stepped outside their comfort zones in a safe and supportive environment.

It was especially encouraging to welcome so many new young people this summer, and we hope to see many of them back in September as we launch new groups and programmes at The Hut Youth Project.

A huge thank you to our staff, volunteers, junior leaders, Ballincollig Coaches, and to all of our supporters: Cork ETB Youth Services, CDYS, Cork City Council RAPID Programme, Cork City Council Sports Department, North Cork Community Work Department Health Action Zone, and Cork City Partnership.

🎉 Gurranabraher & Churchfield Fun Day! ☀️

The Hut Youth Project had a brilliant day with young people enjoying the park, sports, arts & crafts, music, and catching up with friends from across the community.

☀️ What a week at the CDYS The Hut Youth Project Junior Summer Scheme! ☀️

Over 40 young people joined, with a fantastic mix of regular members and lots of new faces.

The week began with games, pizza making, art, quizzes and getting to know each other before young people enjoyed a packed programme of activities including a choice between sports and a BBQ or Fota Wildlife Park, an unforgettable day at West Cork Secret, Options Day with swimming, escape rooms, pool, snooker and the Marina Market, before finishing on a high at Ballyhass Adventure Centre.

One of the best parts of Summer Scheme is seeing young people from different ages, backgrounds and communities come together, make new friends, build confidence, develop teamwork and communication skills, and create memories that will last long after the summer ends.

A huge thank you to our incredible staff, volunteers, junior leaders, Ballincollig Coaches, and most importantly our amazing young people for making the week such a success.

We’re proud to share this video, showcasing the incredible young people and youth work taking place across CDYS Projects in Cork. This video features young people and their voices from the CDYS Fermoy & CDYS Gurranabraher (The Hut) Youth Projects. We must ensure youth work is supported in upcoming budgets to make sure young people who need youth work, have it!

This film was commissioned by Cork ETB Youth Services for the 2026 ETB Youth Work Conference, celebrating the positive impact of youth work and the importance of creating opportunities for young people to thrive.

Youth work provides safe spaces where young people can build confidence, develop new skills, create lasting friendships and realise their full potential.

A special thank you to Pacino Brady for filming and producing this fantastic video.

🇮🇪 🇷🇴 🇪🇺 Exploring West Cork 🚌🏖️🚤🌺

Throughout our Youth Exchange in Schull, we were incredibly lucky to be surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery Ireland has to offer. From the dramatic cliffs of Mizen Head, to the stunning sands of Barleycove Beach, to our boat trip across to Long Island, every day offered a new adventure and a new perspective.

For many of our young people, these places were completely new experiences. Exploring West Cork together encouraged curiosity, conversation and teamwork, while giving everyone the chance to step outside their comfort zones and create memories that will last long after the exchange.

ℹ️ This Youth Exchange brings together young people from across our CDYS UBU Youth Projects in Cork, including Mallow, Midleton, Fermoy, Mitchelstown, Up Cork, and The Hut in Gurranabraher, alongside our partners from Romania. Throughout the week, participants will build friendships, develop new skills, explore different cultures, and create lasting memories through the Erasmus+ programme.

From Reels to Reality: Young People Finding Their Voice

One of the most thought-provoking workshops of our Youth Exchange introduced participants to Journalistic Theatre – a powerful and creative approach that uses drama, music and storytelling to explore real-world issues.

Facilitated by Fiona from Fiona Quinn

Working in international groups, the young people used Instagram Reels as the starting point for their performances, examining how social media algorithms can amplify topics such as racism and gender. Rather than accepting everything they see online at face value, they explored contradiction, questioned what is real or misleading, and reflected on how online platforms can create echo chambers that influence the way we think and interact with others.

Using the structure of journalistic theatre, each group created an original performance featuring music, movement, acting and spoken word. They worked together to transform online content into powerful live performances that challenged stereotypes, encouraged meaningful dialogue and ended with a clear call to action for their audience.

For many participants, this was their first experience of creating or performing theatre. It required them to step outside their comfort zones, trust one another, think creatively and communicate across different languages and cultures.

It was inspiring to watch young people who had never stood on a stage before collaborate, support one another and create performances with genuine impact.

🇪🇺🗣️ Giving Young People a Voice 🇮🇪 🇷🇴

This week our Irish and Romanian participants took part in an inspiring Young Voices workshop facilitated by Dermot from the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI).

National Youth Council of Ireland

Taking place just days after Ireland assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the workshop encouraged young people to explore what it means to be European and to recognise the power of their own voices.

Participants discussed the biggest issues affecting young people today, including mental health, bullying, social media, trust and the cost of living. They also explored democracy, who they trust, and whether the voting age should be lowered to 16.

The session reminded everyone that, by working together, young people across Europe can help shape positive change in their communities and beyond.
