The need for the development was highlighted by the Cong Community Development Association who commissioned a research study which led to the publication of the Cong Community Action Plan 2002 – 2007; Page 19 of Action Plan sets out the following long term goal:

“By the end of 2007 to have a Site and Plan for Community Facility”

The site purchased for the centre is a community owned development

with its own trustees drawn from the Community and is not vested in any one organisation or designed for the sole use or control of any one group. It is situated on the Galway road approximately ½ mile from the village see ‘Discovery Series’ Site Location Map. This location was preferred due to its proximity to other community based facilities. The original site was a lone seven acre Coillte property, consisting of a plantation of Sitka Spruce with some broadleaved trees along its boundaries. Coillte wished to dispose of the non-viable forestry property as they realised its developmental potential. The community through tremendous effort were able to purchase 2.5 acres of this site for a highly reduced price.
