National Day of Action on Mobile Phone / Distracted Driving -

Today, a 24-hour National Day of Action targeting mobile phone use and distracted driving will take place across the Country.
An Garda Síochána Meath will, as always, be highly active during this operation. Enforcement actions will be carried out throughout the Division to detect and deter dangerous driving behaviours.

Distracted driving is defined as any behaviour that diverts a driver’s attention from the road.
According to the Road Safety Authority, distracted driving — including mobile phone use — is estimated to be a contributing factor in 20–30% of all collisions on Irish roads.

If you are detected holding a mobile phone while driving, you will receive a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN) of €120 and 3 penalty points on your driving licence.
"Your mobile phone — would it kill you to put it away?"

With the return of the warm weather, it is important to be conscious of how it affects our pets, particularly our dogs.

*****It is so important not to leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle. Parking in the shade and leaving the windows open slightly is not enough to cool the inside of a car. On hot days, the inside of the car can reach fatal temperatures in under ten minutes.*****

• Always have fresh water available for your pet.
• Make sure they have access to shade and keep them indoors in cooler rooms when the heat becomes too extreme.
• Please be mindful that pets can quickly become dehydrated and can overheat.
• Walk your dog early in the morning and late in the evening when the sun is less strong and temperatures are cooler, not during the day in the hot sun. This will reduce their risk of heatstroke.

If you see an animal locked in a car on a hot day, please contact your local Garda Station or the ISPCA National Animal Cruelty Helpline at 0818 515 515.
