Ahead of the June Bank Holiday weekend, the Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI are urging the public to stay safe if planning an activity on or near the water.

While air temperatures are warmer, sea and inland water temperatures remain low. This contrast can present a hidden but serious risk of cold water shock and hypothermia to anyone entering or unexpectedly falling into the water.

Even on warm, sunny days, water temperatures are often below 15°C, cold enough to trigger cold water shock. This sudden reaction can cause involuntary gasping, panic, and loss of breathing control, greatly increasing the risk of drowning.

While a large number of people are expected to visit the coast or inland waterways over the bank holiday weekend, for many this will be their first dip of the season. Remember to enter the water slowly, splash yourself to acclimatise, keep your dips short and stay within your depth. Don’t go alone, swim with others, always stay together, and ensure everyone leaves the water safely.

If you’re planning an activity in or on the water, remember:

Check weather and tides before heading out, and carry a means of calling for help such as a fully charged mobile phone

Always wear a correctly fitted and serviced lifejacket or buoyancy aid

Avoid alcohol as it impairs judgement, coordination, and reaction time

Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

If you fall into the water unexpectedly or get into difficulty, remember:

Float to Live

Stay calm and fight any instinct to panic or thrash around

Tilt your head back, with your ears submerged

Relax and try to breathe normally

Move your hands and feet to help you stay afloat. It’s fine if your legs sink, we all float differently

Once you’ve regained control of your breathing, call for help or raise your hand or swim to safety if you are able.

If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast or think that they are in trouble, use marine VHF radio Ch 16 or dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

We'd like to say a heartfelt thank you to the Gallagher Family from Louth Village, who recently visited us at Clogherhead RNLI Station to present us with a cheque for €657 in memory of their beloved husband and father Ciaran Gallagher.

Our volunteers were honoured to welcome Ciaran's wife Ann, son Eoin, daughters Aoife and Tara, son-in-laws Ryan and Darragh and Aoife's partner John, giving them a tour of the station and sharing the very best of Clogherhead RNLI hospitality.

The RNLI have launched their 2026 Float to Live campaign. Previous campaigns have helped to save the lives of more than 50 people in all sorts of situations. From children in rip currents to runners falling into canals, from people swept out by waves, to fisherman falling overboard.

Float to Live could save your life.

Remember:
- Tilt your head back with ears submerged
- Relax and try to control your breathing
- Use your hands to help you stay afloat
- It's okay if your legs sink, we all float differently

Practice these steps at a supervised location, like a swimming pool or lifeguarded beach so you know what to do in an emergency.

A fantastic evening was enjoyed by all on Friday 8 May in Clogherhead RNLI station as part of the Louth Fleadh 2026.

People of all ages brought along their musical instruments and came together for a wonderful pop-up Gaeltacht filled with ceol, caint agus craic.

The evening continued with tea and coffee, followed by a relaxed walk and talk along the beach chatting as gaeilge.

On 30 April 2026, Clogherhead RNLI had the honour of welcoming Peter Sparkes, the Chief Executive of the RNLI, accompanied by RNLI Senior Managers and Board Members from across the UK and Ireland. We were delighted to provide them with a tour of the station and showcase the very best of Clogherhead RNLI hospitality.

During the visit, they met members of our crew and fundraising committee, and engaged in discussions on a range of topics central to our volunteers and the ongoing operation of the station. Peter has strong family ties to Ireland, with his father originally from Navan and his grandmother from Drogheda.

Tony Campion our Lifeboat Operations Manager, presented Peter with a copy of his book, 'Yawls to Liners - Nautical Stories of Clogherhead’ which documents seafaring activity in and around Clogherhead from 1475 to the present day from the development of the fishing industry, the many shipwrecks, the great liners, and the impact of two World Wars on the area and its people.

The visit offered a valuable opportunity to share insight into the work of the station and the dedication of our volunteers, crew, and fundraising team. We were honoured to host Peter and his delegation, and we would like to thank them for taking the time to visit us and for their continued support of the vital work of Clogherhead RNLI station and our volunteers.

Recreational craft users urged to think, prepare and stay safe on the water

The beginning of May traditionally marks the start of the boating season, with many sailors and motorboat users returning their craft to the water after winter storage. Boat owners are strongly advised to carry out essential pre‑launch checks, including the condition of the hull, engine, fuel system, steering, batteries, and onboard safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and communication devices.

Anyone sailing or motorboating is reminded to always:

Check the weather forecast, wind conditions and tide times before going afloat
Ensure an emergency action plan is in place and that all crew receive a safety briefing
Inform a responsible person ashore of your plans and your expected return time
Wear a suitable, correctly fitted lifejacket at all times
Carry a reliable means of calling and signalling for help
Have the appropriate level of training for your craft and activity
Operate at a safe speed appropriate to the prevailing conditions and surroundings.

The Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI stress that preparation, situational awareness and having the right safety equipment save lives.

For further guidance, water users are encouraged to consult the Code of Practice for the Safe Operation of Recreational Craft

You can also access free checklists on the RNLI website to help before you go afloat and while you are underway: rnli.org/boostyourskills

If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast or think that they are in trouble, use marine VHF radio Channel 16 or dial 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

Mayday 2026 - We Need Your Support

The RNLI has recently released data from 2025, which shows lifeboats across the island of Ireland launched 967 times last year with volunteer crews at its 46 lifeboat stations, bringing 912 people to safety, 17 of whom were lives saved. 280 of those launches were carried out in the hours of darkness.

The RNLI figures shows the high demand on lifeboat crews and so the charity is putting out its own Mayday call, urging the public to get involved with its biggest national fundraising event, the RNLI Mayday Mile: https://fundraise.rnli.org/event/mayday-mile/registration

Volunteers from Clogherhead RNLI will be fundraising at the following ALDI stores in Laytown and Drogheda this (Friday 1 May 2026) from 9am to 6pm:

📍 ALDI, Cement Road, Drogheda
📍 ALDI, Donore Road, Drogheda
📍 ALDI, Strand Road, Laytown

If you’re out shopping, stop by, say hello, and please donate if you can. Every little bit helps us stay rescue ready 🌊🚤
