An urgently needed analysis from MASI in the face of government inaction. It seems the mainstream parties would rather renege on human rights obligations (both to Irish citizens, and people seeking safety) rather than impose any meaningful restrictions on those profiting from the suffering of others. They have also overseen divisive policies that now leave people homeless on the streets of Dublin as they are prevented from accessing the support of homeless shelters.

MASI rightly points out that the DP system was at full capacity at the end of 2018. and that the arrival of people fleeing war in Ukraine is not the explanation or the excuse for the accommodation crisis.

"Since 2018, the government has been relying on commercial hotels and guest houses at an average cost €100 per night for each asylum seeker prior to the pandemic. This was always unsustainable in the long-term and there have not been any long-term policy changes to address this."

"What should be learned from this is that relying on private corporations, hotels, and guesthouses to address a public housing need is costly and does to respond well to changes in migration patterns."
