Please see a press release issued by the HSE regarding concerns about cannabinoid products available in shops, online and on the illicit market in Ireland. This is also a major concern in relation to young people's vape/spice use in Cavan and Monaghan.

There is such a diverse range of products available with limited information available on the contents or health risks associated with their use. However we are aware of young people becoming unwell, experiencing severe intoxication, adverse mental health reactions and withdrawal from these products. This is in addition to the stress and worry experienced by parents, families and concerned others.

There are amazing resources that inform and support professionals and parents. Please circulate them across your socials and networks.

https://www.drugs.ie/parents - Webinars for parents around prevention and managing substance use if it does emerge as an issue

https://www2.hse.ie/living-well/quit-smoking/other-products/young-people/ - information and advice in relation to young people's va**ng and HSE supports, including QUIT4Youth program

https://www.drugs.ie/drugs_info/for_parents_carers/resources_for_parents/ - HSE resources on Alcohol and Drugs, including how to manage disco's, and the HSE Parent's Guide to assist in speaking with young people about concerns.

https://www.isha.ie/article/hse-va**ng-and-e-cigarette-webinar-booklet-and-information-and-guidance-schools-november - Information on HSE webinar, booklet and guidance for schools on va**ng.

These resources, along with details on local supports, including how professionals/parents can make contact/make a referral to MaCYSS, are available on our website www.macysshub.ie and as always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact MaCYSS at 085 7442857.

There is still time to apply for the first of its kind Building SAFER Certificate which will have its first intake of students for this Autumn. The course will be delivered online over 12 evenings (one evening per week, one study week) and may involve one on campus day in Atlantic Technological University. The course will cover a range of areas including prevention science, public health, and community action approaches and students will benefit from sessions with a range of leading global experts.

The closing date for applications is fast approaching, August 15th. We are delighted to have secured funding to cover the 500 euro fee for up to 15 people, 10 of these are specifically for people living in our 10 SAFER implementation sites: Ballymun, Canal Communities, Celbridge, Cork City, Drogheda, Leixlip, Letterkenny, Listowel, Monaghan and Sligo. For more information contact the course director, Dr Grainne Ketelaar in ATU [email protected]

DAY 2. Be like May! Adopt the i-Mark today.

Dr May Van Schalkwyk is a leading researcher working in the field of commercial determinants of health. Many of the major public health crises we face today are largely driven by powerful corporations. Exposing the extent and impact of harmful commercial influences on our health is the focus of much of May's work. She was one of the first group of academics to adopt the i-Mark at an event in Dublin in June 2026 and she is a member of the global i-Mark steering group.

Young people are particularly vulnerable to alcohol advertising, alcohol brand advertising and digital marketing. We are proud to support the global i-Mark campaign, a movement of academics and researchers from across the globe who are working to protect research from negative alcohol industry interference.
