As another summer begins, children in our community will once again be out cycling, walking to the football field, fishing, visiting friends, and enjoying the freedom that every child deserves.
And as another summer begins, parents will once again worry.
For years, residents have raised concerns about speeding HGVs, lorries and heavy traffic travelling through the Cremartin area. We have submitted petitions, attended meetings, sent emails, and repeatedly asked for measures to slow traffic and improve safety.
Yet here we are again.
Every day, heavy vehicles continue to travel through our community at speeds that residents believe are unsafe. Every day, parents watch and worry. Every day, children use these roads to get to the football field, go fishing, visit friends, or simply enjoy being children.
Residents have done everything asked of them. We have raised concerns. We have gathered support. We have met with officials. We have highlighted the dangers time and time again.
What more are we expected to do?
We are not asking for the impossible. We are asking for action before tragedy, not sympathy afterwards.
How many more summers must pass before the concerns of residents around Cremartin Cross are taken seriously?
To Monaghan County Council, our elected representatives, and all those responsible for road safety: please listen to the families who live here. Please help us make this road safer before a preventable accident changes a family forever.
Our children deserve the same right as every other child - to walk, cycle, play and enjoy their summer without their parents fearing for their safety every time they leave home.
