WESTERN PEOPLE: “THE REAL VICTIMS ARE THE CHILDREN”

We are delighted to see Walk in Our Shoes 2026 featured in the Western People, with Mayo coordinator Margaret Loftus speaking about why she will be walking this Sunday and why reform of Ireland’s family law system matters.

Margaret told journalist Charlotte Davis that the children’s shoes carried during the walk symbolise the children at the heart of the campaign:

“The very least the children of Ireland deserve is a transparent, trauma-informed, trustworthy family law court system that makes decisions in their best interests because they are not old enough to make them themselves.”

Drawing on her own experience, Margaret spoke about domestic abuse, coercive control and the impact of trauma within family law proceedings. She called for greater transparency and accountability, as well as ongoing training for professionals on domestic abuse, coercive control and post-separation abuse.

She also stressed that Walk in Our Shoes is for everyone affected by the family law system — men, women and children.

We sincerely thank Charlotte Davis and the Western People for giving space to this important conversation, and Margaret for speaking publicly about the issues at the heart of our campaign.

Peaceful one-mile solidarity walks will take place across all 26 counties.

📍 MAYO: Meet at the Tusla offices, Mill Lane, Castlebar, and walk to Castlebar Courthouse.

Wear black and bring a pair of children’s shoes.
The walks will take place in silence.
No registration is required.

🇮🇪 NATIONAL WALK — DUBLIN

Our national Walk in Our Shoes event takes place three days later:

The Changing Face of Violence Against Women in Donegal. Abuse is not always visible. The nature of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence is changing, with women and children experiencing increasingly complex forms of abuse and control.

Donegal Women’s Centre, Donegal Domestic Violence Services and Lifeline Inishowen have come together to highlight the growing impact of coercive control, financial abuse and technology-facilitated abuse across Donegal. Technology can be used to monitor, threaten, isolate and control women, through location tracking, phone monitoring, social media harassment, surveillance and intimidation.

And leaving an abusive relationship does not necessarily mean escaping the abuse. Technology can allow perpetrators to continue exerting control from a distance.

For women living in a large and predominantly rural county like Donegal, distance, isolation, transport, housing and financial dependence can create additional barriers to accessing safety and support.

Mary Herlihy, Manager of Donegal Women’s Centre, says: “Women across Donegal deserve support, regardless of where they live.Women need somewhere safe to turn, somewhere they will be heard, believed and supported."

Fiona Jordan of Donegal Domestic Violence Services highlights how women may experience several forms of abuse at the same time, with technology increasingly being used as another tool of control.

Bridgeen Coyle of Lifeline Inishowen also emphasises the importance of local, community-based services for women and families living in rural communities.

Together, we want to highlight the changing nature of abuse and the importance of ensuring that women and children across Donegal can access specialist support within their communities.
