🍦 Gemma Italian Gelato, Carlow

We called into Gemma Italian Gelato this evening and went for the sour cherry. Absolutely gorgeous. 🍒🍦

Really creamy, packed with flavour and the sour cherry had just the right bit of sharpness to it. Properly refreshing and a very generous cone too.

Safe to say, I’ll be back. Highly recommended. 😋👌

It really puzzles me how people keep messaging me to help on the group, knowing that I have several times made posts about my restrictions. If I could, I would, but I can't. Please wait until I have full access restored on September 17th.

Also, Seamus, a wonderful man, has no admin access to AAC and is an absolute saint. He can't approve posts either. He has kept this group on life support for the past 3 months by "sharing all my posts".

Yesterday I received a very angry DM demanding 1. to know what gives me the right to remove their post. When I explained it wasn't me, 2. demanded proof!!!!

On June 21st, when I got my account back for all of 10 hours, I made my nephew an admin. His account of 11 years was removed and restricted on the 22nd, so I have no admin access. Past admins on the group have lost their accounts, and I am extremely restricted as to what I can and cannot do.

So please stop making unnecessary demands of me regarding things I simply do not have the ability or access to deal with. I have explained this repeatedly, and there is nothing more I can do until my access is restored.

I apologise to the rest of the group who already know and have seen all the other posts. I hate having to repeat myself over and over.

🏠 48 Social Homes Approved for Foran’s Way, Tullow

There is positive housing news for Tullow, with approval confirmed for 48 homes at Foran’s Way, Tullowbeg to be made available for social housing.

Carlow County Council will continue working with Co-operative Housing Ireland on the allocation of the properties.

The current expectation is that the process involving the 48 homes will be completed by late November 2026.

A wonderful milestone for Irish Wheelchair Association Carlow, as members, staff and supporters recently came together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the IWA centre in Carlow.

The occasion also marked another important achievement, with members of the centre’s creative writing group launching their fifth collection after 13 years of writing together with local author Lissa Oliver.

The anniversary celebration included reflections on the history and development of the Carlow centre, memories shared by members, readings from the creative writing group and recognition of the people who have helped make the centre what it is today.

Among those remembered and thanked were Gerry Morahan, Dolly Dunne, Betty Lawler and the late Jackie Lawler, while IWA Carlow Secretary Grace Doyle also spoke about the confidence and friendships she has gained through her involvement with the centre.

👏 Congratulations to everyone at IWA Carlow on 20 years of community, friendship, creativity and support.

🎭 Val Vousden: A Carlow Life That Reached Stage, Screen and Radio

Above the doorway of this modest house on College Street, Carlow, a plaque marks the birthplace of one of Carlow's notable figures in Irish entertainment.

William Francis Maher MacNevin, better known by his stage name Val Vousden, was born here at 2 College Street on 29 January 1885. He began performing remarkably young, appearing as Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol at Carlow Town Hall in 1891, when he was just six years old.

Vousden went on to build a career as an actor, entertainer, poet and playwright, appearing on stage and becoming a familiar voice during the early years of Irish radio. His film appearances included Irish Destiny (1926), Captain Boycott (1947) and Odd Man Out (1947).

The plaque itself has an interesting history. It was erected by the Old Carlow Society and unveiled on Sunday, 2 October 1983, by Alec Burns, then Vice-President of the society.

The inscription reads:

ACTOR, ENTERTAINER, COMPOSER
WAS BORN IN THIS HOUSE
29 - 1 - 1885
DIED 6 - 6 - 1951

THE OLD CARLOW SOCIETY

Val Vousden died on 6 June 1951 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin. More than seventy years later, this little plaque on College Street continues to mark the Carlow home where his story began.

💜 NEW BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP BEGINS IN CARLOW THIS EVENING

A new bereavement support group begins in Carlow this evening, offering people who have experienced the loss of a loved one an opportunity to meet with others who understand the difficult journey of grief.

The group has been established by Emma Ferris and will initially run over four Wednesday evenings at Eden Brook Counselling & Therapeutic Centre on the Athy Road.

📅 First Meeting: This evening, Wednesday, 2 September 2026
🕢 Time: 7.30pm to 9.00pm
📍 Where: Eden Brook Counselling & Therapeutic Centre, Athy Road, Carlow, R93 C4A3
💜 Organiser: Emma Ferris

The initial plan is to hold four meetings, with the group then assessing the level of interest and whether the meetings should continue.

The idea behind the group is to provide a supportive setting for people dealing with bereavement and grief, with an opportunity to meet and talk with others who may have experienced similar loss.

Eden Brook has kindly provided the space for the meetings.

For anyone who may be struggling following a bereavement, or who feels that meeting others with similar experiences could be helpful, the first meeting takes place this evening from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.

South East Technological University (SETU) is entering a defining new phase, with more than 3,000 students expected to begin their first year this September, including the inaugural classes in Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy.

The five-year MVB in Veterinary Medicine and the five-year integrated Master of Pharmacy will each welcome their first cohort of 40 students, marking a significant expansion of professional education in the South East.

Commenting on this year’s CAO places, Dr Derek O'Byrne, Vice President for Academic Affairs at SETU, said:

The 2026 CAO intake demonstrates how SETU is becoming the university for the region: ambitious in scale, focused on performance and confident in its role as a catalyst for growth across the South East. Students will join a vibrant university community spanning Waterford, Carlow and Wexford, with access to expert teaching and modern learning environments, providing a strong foundation for their professional careers.
