๐ŸŒŠA rip current is a strong, narrow flow of water moving away from the shore.

Rip currents can be dangerous because if a person gets caught in one, they can be pulled away from shore.

Rip currents can be difficult to spot.

Knowing how to spot a rip current can help you stay safe when open water swimming.

Look out for:
โœ…Gaps in breaking waves
โœ…Darker or smoother water
โœ…Debris moving away from shore

If you ever find yourself in trouble in the water the best thing to do is float like a star.

Remember:
Don't panic
Lie on your back in the water
Look up towards the sky
Stretch your arms and legs out beside you like a star
Concentrate on taking slow controlled breaths
