There's a curious bit of Irish history behind the phrase ๐ผ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ โ„Ž ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘š๐‘’ โ€” although perhaps not quite the explanation you might expect!

Until 1916, Ireland had its own official time, known as Dublin Mean Time, which was 25 minutes and 21 seconds behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

The difference came from Dublin's position west of Greenwich. While GMT became the standard in Britain in 1880, Ireland kept its own time until 1916.

Today, you can still see the difference between clock time and the sun's natural rhythm at the sundial on Buncrana's Shore Front. Its information panel explains that local solar noon in Buncrana occurs 29 minutes and 50 seconds after mean noon in Greenwich. The exact difference between sundial time and our clocks also changes throughout the year.

So, the next time someone accuses you of being late in Ireland, you can always blame the old Dublin clock. Just don't forget that it hasn't been an excuse since 1916!
