Long before Oโ€™Flahertyโ€™s became known for live music, cocktails, quiz nights and busy weekends, it was known as the ๐ƒ๐ฎ๐ง๐ซ๐ž๐ž ๐๐š๐ซ.

The story goes back to ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ, when the first generation, ๐๐ข๐  ๐“๐จ๐ฆ ๐Žโ€™๐…๐ฅ๐š๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ฒ, came from Connemara in Galway to serve as a Sergeant at Dunree Fort. He later left the army and opened the Dunree Bar on Main Street in Buncrana.

More than 80 years later, ๐Žโ€™๐…๐ฅ๐š๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ฒโ€™๐ฌ ๐๐š๐ซ is still a family-run pub in the heart of Buncrana โ€” with a little bit of its history still visible on the walls.

And now theyโ€™re bringing another piece of Irish pub tradition back to life.

Oโ€™Flahertyโ€™s has recently installed ๐š ๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐ฆ-๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐†๐ฎ๐ข๐ง๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐š๐ฉ, inspired by the way Guinness was traditionally served before modern refrigeration.

So whether youโ€™re there for the music, the craic, the cocktails โ€” or youโ€™re curious enough to try a pint the old-fashioned way โ€” thereโ€™s a story behind the bar.

In Burt, just below ๐†๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง๐šฬ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ข๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ก, one little building has been part of village life for generations.

This old corrugated-iron hut was once ๐Œ๐š๐ ๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐žโ€™๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐Ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐†๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐’๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ž, serving the people of Burt from the late 1960s and later selling everything from groceries to Arran knitwear. Much of the original interior remains today.

Today, the building has a rather different purpose.

It is home to ๐ˆ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐“๐ฎ๐ซ๐Ÿ ๐‚๐š๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ, a family-owned business creating unique, handmade candles and candle holders from locally sourced turf. Everything is designed and made in their on-site workshop, including bespoke pieces and small runs.

Step inside and youโ€™ll find the turf candles alongside a fascinating collection of antique and vintage curiosities โ€” so the shop itself feels a little like stepping into another time.

From a village post office and general store to handmade Donegal souvenirs, Maguireโ€™s hut is still telling its story โ€” just in a different way.

In 2016, brothers Shane and Edward Doherty took a chance on a small border village and opened Tank & Skinnyโ€™s in M**f.

The idea wasnโ€™t without its doubters. But with the help of family and friends, they transformed an empty building in just four weeks and opened the cafรฉ and bakery in time for the M**f Festival.

What started in M**f has since grown into five locations across the northwest, including two here in Inishowen: their village cafรฉ in M**f and the Seaside cafรฉ in Buncrana.

And just a few weeks ago, the brothers took on the Inishowen 100 Mile challenge, running and cycling 100 miles around the peninsula to celebrate 10 years of Tank & Skinnyโ€™s in M**f and raise money for Lauralynn Childrenโ€™s Hospice and Friends of Inishowen Hospice. Together, they helped raise an incredible โ‚ฌ17,063 for the two charities.

From coffee and fresh baking to getting involved in the community around them, itโ€™s a nice example of a local business growing while staying connected to the communities it serves.
