Buncrana Community First Responder Group

Buncrana Community First Responder Group CFR is volunteers, trained to respond to lifethreatening emergencies before the ambulance arrives

13/06/2026

Celebrating our incredible Community First Responders (CFRs)! This week marked the 5th National Ambulance Service Volunteer Awards, a milestone dedicated to honouring the selflessness of our local heroes.

Nationwide, there are approx. 5,000 volunteers across 350+ CFR teams giving up their time to support both their communities and the National Ambulance Service. When an emergency call comes in, these dedicated individuals are often first on the scene, providing critical, life-saving care in those vital minutes before an ambulance arrives.

But their impact goes far beyond attending emergency calls. Every week, our CFRs are out in the wider community, delivering local training and empowering neighbours to develop community resilience.

To all our volunteers: thank you for your unwavering commitment, your midnight calls, and your passion for your communities. You truly make a difference. 🚑❤️

We are so incredibly proud!

We don't do what we do for praise or recognition, we do it because we care deeply about our community and helping others when they need us most.
However, to have our dedication, commitment, and hard work recognised this way means more than words can express.

We are truly grateful for all the support, encouragement, and kindness we have received along the way. This award belongs to every member, volunteer, supporter, and person who has believed in us from the beginning.

We will continue to grow, thrive, and strive to be the very best we can be for our community and help other groups as best we can 🤍

Thank you all your kind words 🙌

Yesterday was a truly special day for Buncrana Community First Responders 🙌

We are incredibly proud and honoured to share that we were awarded
✨️National Ambulance Scheme of the Year ✨️
at the National Ambulance Service Community Awards held at NAS Headquarters in Tallaght, Dublin.

To be recognised as the top scheme in the country, from 361 Community First Responder groups nationwide, is an achievement beyond anything we could have imagined, especially considering that our group has only been operational for two years.

This award belongs to every single person who has supported us on our journey.

To our dedicated responders who volunteer their time, day and night, thank you.
To our hardworking committee, thank you for your commitment and vision.
To the Community Engagement Team and the National Ambulance Service staff who support, guide and work alongside us, thank you for believing in us and helping us always 🫶

Most importantly, huge thank you to our families who support us behind the scenes and to the people of Buncrana and the surrounding community who have encouraged, trusted and supported us from day one.

This recognition is not just for our group, it is for our entire community of Buncrana & Inishowen 🫶

We are so proud of how far we have come in such a short time, and we remain committed to serving our community whenever we are needed.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

On a quiet Sunday evening in Buncrana, a family’s world changed in an instant. At 5:07pm on Sunday, 3rd May, 2026, a gentleman named Iain suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while visiting Buncrana.

For most people, a cardiac arrest outside of hospital can be fatal within minutes, but on this day, everything that needed to happen, happened.

Ordinary people became lifesavers. Iain’s wife, Jayne, immediately called for help. Nearby
campervan owners stepped forward, raising the alarm with the National Ambulance Service and started CPR. A local man then assisted, continuing the life-saving efforts. They didn't hesitate. They didn't wait. They acted.

At the same time, Buncrana Community First Responders were alerted by the National
Ambulance Service. Within just two minutes of receiving the call, responders were on scene. An
AED was immediately placed on Iain. CPR continued. Two shocks were delivered.

Then came the moment everyone hopes for, Iain began to show signs of life.
Responders provided rescue ventilations to support his breathing and remained by his side,
monitoring and caring for him until the National Ambulance Service arrived.
From there, Iain received specialist post-resuscitation care in hospital.

Just 19 days later, he walked back through his own front door.
Home to his wife. Home to his family. Home to his life.

Today, Iain is recovering well and adjusting to life with his newly fitted internal defibrillator, but he knows that without the actions of those around him that evening, he may not be here to tell his story.

In his own words;
"Quite simply.. YOU ALL SAVED MY LIFE."

Iain has requested that his story be shared on our social media channels and has given his consent for this publication, not only to thank those who helped him, but to highlight the importance of learning CPR and Community First Responders. The photo below was taken just three weeks before Iain's cardiac arrest, showing Iain and Jayne after completing the hike to the top of the Old Man of Storr on the Isle of Skye.

His survival is proof that the Chain of Survival works:
❤️ Early Access
❤️ Early CPR
❤️ Early Defibrillation
❤️ Early Advanced Life Support
❤️ Early Post-Resuscitation Care

✨Every link matters ✨

To the neighbouring campervanners,
To the local man,
To the Buncrana Community First Responders,
To the National Ambulance Service crews,
To the hospital teams,
And to Jayne, who stood by Iain's side every step of his journey, kindly keeping our team
updated throughout his recovery.

THANK YOU ❤️

Because of your actions, a husband, family member and friend is still here today.

This is why CPR training matters.
This is why Community First Responders matter.
This is why every second counts❤️

In the car this bank holiday weekend? 69 people have died on our roads already this year, so we're asking you to please slow down and stay safe.

Put your phone down, never ever drive under the influence and always make a plan for getting home.

Last night, our Responders had the privilege of a fantastic presentation by Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Paul Boucher ✨

He walked us through advanced life support, post-resuscitation care, patient pathways including emergency medicine, intensive care medicine, cardiac intervention and patient recovery journey.

The presentation was truly brilliant. We’re incredibly lucky to have such talented and knowledgeable people in our community, like Dr. Paul Boucher, who are willing to support our First Responders group. We deeply appreciate all the time, knowledge and support given. Thank you for inspiring us to keep growing as a team 🫶
